Hi Marglitt, The gauge should work with any amount of fuel and indicate how much is in the tank. What does happen on modern cars, is that the gauge will fail to move if a small amount of fuel is filled into the tank. This is a measure taken as most petrol driven vehicles have the pumps immersed in fuel, which helps cool the pump and prolongs the life of the unit. The reserve light may remain on if the fuel level has not risen above the operational level of the same warning light.
