I have a 99 suburban i bought 2 weeks ago. today driving home, went to pass someone it seemed to hesitate and bog down. also seemed like it was backfiring. if you give it gas quick it does the same thing. it idles fine, you push the accelerator slow it will rev up to around 3000 rpm and after that it will bog down and sputter. any ideas. It only has 117000 miles.

I haven't pulled the fuel filter yet, but doesn't look like it has ever been replaced. not really sure where the maf is, sorry i'm no mechanic but willing to learn, just frustrated, bought this 2 weeks ago and already replaced brakes, and a front sway bar. no check engine light is on so i'm hoping just a simple fuel problem. it seems to idle fine. thanks for any help. I guess i can just clean the maf sensor?

The MAF sensor is at the intake manifold. At the opening if you see wiring connected to where the air passes from the intake, that is your mAF sensor. If you have spare carb cleaner or contact cleaner you may want to spray it and the intake itself.

First check your basics. Check the fuel filter for plugging. It is on the driver's side of the frame underneath the vehicle. The other item to check is the MAF or mass air flow sensor. If there is a check engine light on have it scanned by a local auto parts store for free and let me know what the codes are. Be happy to help further.

The MAF is the sensor in between the air filter box and the throttle body. Will have like 4-5 wires going to it. If it is failing don't bother cleaning it. Replace it. Go ahead and change the fuel filter as they are less than $10.

the best thing to do is to have the car scaned with the diagnostic computer to see what fault codes are stored.

it sounds like a converter is plugging up,if it runs good when you are just feathering the throttle, then the more gas you give it the slower it goes, that would point to converter, since you didn't say the truck didn't shut off on you when you kicked it down,i wouldn't think it would be fuel, but you can check the fuel pressure at the reed valve on the fuel rail, you need to see at least 55psi of fuel pressure for the truck to run.

Has the fuel filter been service in the past 30K, if not you should replace it. Also, check the fuel pressure and let me know. Could be a fuel pump issue.

99 Gmc Suburban

On the 1999 - 2000 5.7 vortec engines the distributor gears wear causing the timing to change 2 or more degrees. The ecm is designed to shut down at 2 or more degreedifference. This is in a GM bulletin that recommends replacement at 160k miles. Mine went out at 150k miles. Very similar driving symtoms until it quit running. Both cam sensor codes were set on mine though, not the crank sensor.
