How much oil for the gearbox and is it a special oil

Special tool required is the oil filler tool. The draining part is just an allen key.

Now you can't use gearbox in in power steering system this will block valves and the grade is very different .You can use automatic transmition oil , but it's recommended that you see if it's not hydronic oil as some makes like audio use special hydronic oil

Is it a full auto box or auto with manual selection. Full auto has only 1,2,D,R. If its full auto take it to a regular tyre/exhaust place and ask them to help.
The vw and audi auto gearboxes that also have selectable manual gears are only reliable when they have the correct clean oil in them.
The oil is special and expensive, and you must only use the oil from VW. If you havent changed the gearbox oil, get it done. Its much cheaper as a first step, compared to taking the gearbox apart to check for wear or damage.

if this is the ford galaxy as built in europe then its a VW gearbox and the only way it can be filled is the dealer special tools where its pumped up from underneath through a special adaptor ,earlier models had a rubber plug middle front of gearbox and you fill to top then start engine and top up again .but the newer ones ?? dealer only

you should the filler / oil level plug on the side of the gear box about halfway up, it can be on either side,you will have to do this from under the vehicle this plug is both filler & oil level you will most likely need a special equipment to get the oil in, it is like a large syringe with a tube on the end of it (about12" long) you **** the oil with it & fill the gearbox that way until the oil runs out of the plug hole........hope this helps.......cheers.

First thing to check is oil-level in the gearbox. If far below the filler hole - refill and look for oil leaks around seals and in clutch housing.

If oil level is ok - it might need changing or when serviced recently, it might have been filled with the wrong oil.

Somewhere on the side of the gearbox there's a bolt with a seal ring. Usually this is the filler hole. Oil level check is simple, stick a finger in downwards. Should feel the oil level.

Gear boxes need the right oil viscosity and are quite sensitive - meaning changing gears gets difficult specially when cold.

You may need a special tool for the drain plug and a 17mm allen key for the filler (some use the special drain tool for the filler as well)

The drain plug is located under the diff housing.

The filler plug is located on the left (nearside) off the gearbox (look to the left of the hole and you can see the 17mm hex filler bung).

Check you can undo the filler bung, then drain the gearbox oil.

Refit drain bung and fill gearbox through filler/level ********* until gearbox oil is up to the level of the filler bung.

Refit, test drive, check for leaks and retest level again when cold.

try adding a can of trans tune to oil.

Well, I'm not sure. Try changing the gearbox oil and try again. I saw on the other postings that most Audi gearbox problems pointing to a gearbox swap can be solved through oil change. I just had mine changed and it has reduced sluggishness and shuddering at low temperatures (from cool engine). It's a special gearbox oil you need to get from Audi, by the way.
