My 2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7L hemi with automatic transmission is stalling when idling at a stop light, etc. I had had my truck in at the dealership where they performed SB18-013-05 and the problem had been fixed but now it's returned. It presently has 2 active DTC's : P0406 and P0137. I read that there is an EGR replacement covered by emissions warranty and is also accompanied by SB18-010-04. This may be the cause of the P0406 DTC but is this also what is causing the revs to drop and stall?
Took my truck to the dealership. A code was set for a vehicle speed sensor whenever stalling occurred. Mechanic followed troubleshooting procedures but found outcome to be pcm replacement. He then contacted engineering at dodge and found that there are two vehicle speed sensors which readings are taken from: one on the front left wheel and the other at the differential. When sensor on wheel was disconnected, truck would not stall. For some reason (engineering doesn't even know), engine light does not appear and truck runs well!! I hade dtcs-P0406 on my 04 ram I took the egr valve off and cleaned it got the valve moveing again but code came back up shouldnt this eliminated that? My trucks rpms drop below 500 when sitting at idle, then the truck dies. I can cut the ignition off, restart, and be fine until I idle again. Any clue as o how much this is going to cost me? it sometimes stalls when decelerating. Here are a few possible causes for these issues:
1. Vacuum leak: Check for any vacuum leaks in the engine. A leaking vacuum hose or intake manifold gasket can cause a rough idle and stalling. Inspect all vacuum hoses and fittings, and consider using a smoke machine to help identify any leaks.
2. Idle Air Control (IAC) valve: The IAC valve controls the amount of air entering the engine during idle. If it becomes dirty or faulty, it can cause a rough idle. Try cleaning the IAC valve with an appropriate cleaner or consider replacing it if necessary.
3. Fuel system issues: A clogged fuel filter or a malfunctioning fuel pump can lead to insufficient fuel delivery at idle, causing rough idling and stalling. Consider inspecting and replacing the fuel filter if necessary. It may also be worth checking the fuel pressure to ensure it is within the manufacturer's specifications.
check the idle air and throttle for excessive carbon build up or sticking. this can be cleaned with some throttle body cleaner and a little time, most times. some more information would help. is the engine light on? any major service been done or even minor? number of miles? how long has this happened?
On modern day cars the parts that get fitted need to be adapted to the ECM using a decent diagnostic machine. I bet that this was not done and the car is now suffering as a result.
Something to try is resetting the ECU, simply disconnect battery for 10 minutes, reconnect, then start car from cold *without touching gas pedal* and leave idling until the rad fan comes on (this resets all the base idle settings) then take it for a drive - hopefully will solve the problem
Remove IAC (idle speed control) motor, clean with throttlebody spray cleaner & the port (hole)it came out of. Re-install & try it. If it cures it for a while & does it again, replace the IAC motor.
I had this same problem in my 04' Hemi I would be driving and as I pulled up to a stop sign or light it would die. No check light or codes. Took it to the dealer they said it was the alternator put a new one in and never had another problem.
It's probably a bad torque converter---that's what allows the engine to idle when transmission is still in gear. It locks when the car is moving, but if it doesnt unlock then the engine will stall out.
