I have a 91 mercury cougar and am in the process of putting a gasquet on the fuel pump. while removing the tank a "plug" came out of another hole. not the hole that the sending unit is in. this plug has a white hard plastic center with a nipple that looks like a hose should attatch to it. it is an inch and a half in diam. and on the bottom side of this "plug" there is a visible spring. my question beings i didnt see the piece hit the ground is this should the spring be visible or does the soft plastic "cap" that i found next to it fit into the hole ...it does fit perfectly, and im not sure if this "cap" fell out of the "plug" when the "plug" hit the ground? any help would be apprieciated

SOURCE: 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis Fuel Pump Replacement

you can try just resetting the fuel pump switch located in the car

the switch is originally in the car for in case of an accident, however, if changed, chances are you also have to reset it

in my 98 grand marquis, the switch is on the left side of the trunk

SOURCE: 1999 mercury cougar. won't start...cranks...battery ok.

V6 ? 4CYL? Have you verified SPARK? Did anyone check the "fuel pump inertia switch?" Its in the right front kick panel. If it was a "Anti-theft Issue" the light would be on or flashing.

1992 Mercury Cougar. How to remove heat shield from fuel tank 1992 Cougar 3.8 please?

below it or above.
what is the job , what is wrong or what is reason to ask this
pull the tank, the service manual covers by job.
pull tank
pull pump
etc.
Tank quote:
"On 1989-92 models the exhaust pipe and exhaust shields must be removed from the car first, refer to Engine section for proper removal and installation procedures"
so now we know it is an exhaust shield.
most are simple nut/ bolts
some are spot welded. or using rivets
just look and see what is there.,
if one does not come off, remove the whole section of EXH pipe.
a car this old may have had 3 exhaust systems there in 30 year.

that is all I can do blind. no photo posted of it.

Mercury cougar 2002 run out of gas. then died. put gas in and now wont start. what could it be?

the fuel rail has to be bled out. when you run a fuel injected car out of gas sometimes the fuel rail needs to have the air bled out before it will operate properly.

Where is the fuel pump on a 1997 Mercury Cougar XR7 and how di get to it?

It's inside the fuel tank. Access is on top. Remove tank. 2 straps hold it in place.

Removal
  1. Relieve fuel system pressure as described under Fuel System Pressure Relief.
  1. Drain fuel from the fuel tank as described.
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  1. Remove the exhaust system as required. Refer to Section 09-00.
  1. NOTE: The connections for the rear fuel supply return and vapor tube (9S278) to the fuel pump module are on top of the fuel tank and are inaccessible. They must be disconnected with the fuel tank partially lowered from the vehicle.

Disconnect fuel tank to filler pipe hose (9047) and vent hoses connecting the fuel tank filler pipe (9034) to fuel tank. Disconnect one end of the vapor crossover hose at the rear over the driveshaft (4602).
  1. Place a safety support under the fuel tank. Remove the bolts from the fuel tank support straps (9092). Take care not to deform the fuel tank or fuel tank support straps. Fuel tank capacity and/or fuel pick-up may be adversely affected.
  1. Partially remove the fuel tank and disconnect the rear fuel supply return and vapor tubes at push connect fittings using Fuel Line Disconnect Tool Set T90T-9550-S. Disconnect electrical connector from the fuel pump module.
  1. Remove fuel tank from the vehicle.

How to change fuel pump on mercury cougar 99 2.5L V6

The Cougar uses the same platform as the Contour so it should be like it is on my Contour. Remove the rear seat bottom and you'll see a cover in the floor. Remove that cover and you'll be able to see the top of the fuel tank. You'll need to remove the lines coming out of the top and use a punch with a hammer to rotate that locking ring. Once you remove the ring you can pull the pump module out of the tank. Be careful not to bend the fuel level float. You'll be able to see how to get to the pump once the module is out. Just take the cover off and put the new pump in the module and re-install.
