I fixed this problem on my truck by changing the Oil Pump Inlet Tube O-Ring. The lifters are the first part that don't get enough oil after this o-ring breaks down. All Chevrolet mid 2000s era 5.3L O-Ring fails around 150-190K.

SOURCE: Lifter ticking when I start my 1999 Chevy Tahoe

Your lifters have become clogged over the years. Its only after the oil warms up and thins out does it allow oil to "pump up" the lifters. That's why it goes quiet after 5 min. There are several different brands of additives on the market that can fix this problem ,unless you have a more serious mechanical problem, which I doubt.Check your local auto parts store for the additive. Just add it to your oil and "wham!" problem solved. Good Luck!

Lifters on top. Rod bearings on bottom. Lifters are normal. they should come out of tapping. Bearings only get worse.

Can lifters be replaced

Oh yea, lifters can be replaced , best if you replace cam an lifters together ! Loud knocking is not usually associated with lifters , they usually make a ticking noise ! Knocking noise is most usually in the bottom of the motor , main or rod bearings . most of the time rod bearings !

Tick in motor with a lot of blowback coming from oil cap has started making a whining noise. not the knock sensor. could it be the oil pump?

The ticking may be coming from the valves, and or, the rocker arms, and or, the lifters. I have a 1996 Chevy Cavalier that has valve train noise and has 230,000 miles on it and is still going. If you are taking the oil cap off when the engine is running, you will see oil spitting out of it, since the engine is lubing the top end. Most vehicles have a pressure gauge on the instrument panel, and or, an oil light, which would show pressure problems. Try to isolate where the ticking is coming from by using a mechanics stethoscope, or a screw driver to your ear. The handle part of the screw driver goes to your ear of course. Place the scope or screw driver blade close to where the tick is coming from and you will hear the ticking get louder the closer you get to it.

A loud ticking noise?

No I would not chase to the pistons, these vehicle were very comon in creating HLA noise hydraulic lash adjusting valves, meaning the valves pump up with oil as the oil gets thinner they dont pump up as fast and create a very loud ticking noise, I would not express a great concern over simplicity, dodge was famous for this, they really were.

I have 2005 Chevrolet Silverado and it just started making a ticking noise in the engine. The ticking noise gets faster and louder with higher revolutions.

I bought a used 05 Silverado and it had started to get a ticking noise. I had one of the lifters replaced as it was determined that it was sticking. A week later the oil pump went. Replaced the pump and have not had any issues since.

Ticking Noise in 01 Chevy Silverado 2500

if noise is higher pitched and coming in on valve time...(2wice for every revolution of motor..ie: faster)...then upper end pressure is down due to sludge, wear , lifter failure, valvespring failure, rocker stud lifting out of cylinder head (kinda common) cam bearings failing (very rare)..oil pump bypass stuck open..and a few other possibilities... respond and we will go over lower end sound (deeper ,slower) and see what identifies your issues .... miles
