Transmission linkage Where can I get a drawing or photo of an internal view of a 95 dodge neon sport transmission linkage. I pulled the linkage up to far and now the gears do not line up inside the car on the automatic gear shift. Is it also out of alignment internally?

Vibration at idle brings to mind a few suspects:

transmission mount(s) broken/missing
transmission internally worn
motor mount(s) broken/missing

(1) transmission internally worn or transmission mount broken/missing - test this by shifting into neutral at the next stop light. If the vibration disappears when you disengage the transmission, then the transmission is the source of the vibration. You'll have to inspect the transmission mounts - if they're ok, then the transmission is internally worn and can no longer smoothly "slip" while idling in drive.
(2) motor mount broken/missing - also test this by shifting into neutral at the next stop light. If the vibration persists, then the transmission is exonerated, and the vibration is coming from (under) the engine. The rubber part of motor mounts commonly crack/break and or pop out and are lost.

Check the Transmission Dipstick OIL level to ensure the level is up to the FULL mark. A low oil level will be insufficient to keep the drive engaged as the system gets hot, and will eventually damage the internal gearing, and also the seals.

A common problem on Neons, ( happened to me on my 95 and 97 as well ) is the throttle pressure control linkage at the transmission seizes and causes hard shifting and sometimes your gas pedal feels stiffer as well when pushed to floor, but loose at top. The linkage is located on top of where the shifter linkage attaches to the transmission, basically under your battery tray on drivers side. Remove the battery, and look down under the tray and you should see it. The part you want to concentrate on is the linkage that sits on top. WARNING!! Do not undo nut etc and remove it from the shaft it is attached to or you will end up getting it towed to tranny shop for repairs, as linkage drops down and transmission pan and some internal parts need to be removed to re-attach it. Just leave it alone. That linkage needs to move freely and independent of shifter linkage. You'll have to spray with WD-40 or similar, to work it loose and get it to turn back and forth all the way. (about 90 degree sweep) Once you have it moving freely, apply a good coat of white lithium spray grease to keep it protected and lubricated. This picture may help, even though its a little small. Once that's freed up, your shifting problems should go away.

Souds like worn linkage problem, at the transmission try to remove the levers and hope you can pull it out of the 2nd gear then inspect all the rubber bushings at the end of the shift levers.replace as needed and problem should not happen again. in the case that you can not get it out of 2nd gear either pay an experienced tech to do it or replace the transmission.

Follow throttle valve cable to linkage above shifter cable and linkage. Probably slightly seized and hanging up, causing it to stay in lower gear too long. Hard to see, might have to remove battery and battery tray to get at it good. It has to move freely, and it will usually seize up unless lubed regularly. Should be able to move it easily back and forth by hand. Spray it good with WD-40 or whatever to loosen it up, then coat with white lithium spray grease as well. P.S. do not remove throttle valve linkage (top one) to clean or lube it, otherwise you'll be pulling tranny apart to fix it.

Here is some possible reasons why your transmission is having those problems .

* The gear shift linkage is binding
* There is an internal problem in the transmission
* The throttle cable is broken or disconnected
* The vacuum modulator on the transmission is faulty or the vacuum line is damaged
* The electronic transmission control circuit may be faulty

You need to get to the transmission linkages with some penetrating spray, right where they are attached to transmission at front drivers side. You may have to remove battery & tray to get better access, but 90% of time that's the problem area. You'll see where the shifter linkages attach & pivot on top. The top linkage is your power valve,(like a kickdown) which kicks it down on acceleration, then returns after. This needs to move freely, and it may take some work & spray to get it loosened up, but that should help with your problem, as it affects the shifter itself too. After you get them movong freely, put a good coat of white lithium grease or similar on them . On my 95 neon, i'd have to do it, about once a year or more. Initially it would shift out of lower gear to next at higher revs, and when stopping it would shift down hard. Good Luck

If the shifter feels loose you may have problems with the shifter linkage bushings, either next to the shifter or on the transmission itself.
If the shifter feels tight you have a problem with the clutch or an internal transmission problem.
