2004 lincoln aviator having a strange whining noise from the engine

I have a 2004 aviator and now i hear a strange whining noise. noise will increase when I accelerate. Sound is coming from below where we add the power steering fluid. Can you help me figure out what this is? does anybody have similar problems with the aviator?. The sound is an airplane whining.

I have an 04 Aviator as well and have started getting exactly the same symptoms. Were you able to fix/isolate the problem?

Will appreciate if you can email me at [email protected].

    Thanks, Ashish

I have a 2003 Avaiator with 80000 miles on it. I have a winning noise that sounds to me like the power steering pump is going. I have not taken action on repairing it yet but I find it interesting that other people have the same problem. I also have a growling noise coming from the rear. It sounds like a bearing of some sort. Has anyone experenced that?

It sounds like a bad bearing on either a alternater, the power steering pump, the a/c clutch,or an idler/belt tensioner for the serpentine belt. lift the hood star the vehicle and turn a/c on have someone run the engine to 1500-2000 rpm you should be able to hear which one of these is the proble and have it replaced. hope this helps. please rate this solution. thanks

I had the same sound on my 2003 Aviator (58k miles). It changed pitch with engine speed. It turned out to be a bad idler pulley (had slight play in it), but I couldn't really tell which one with the belt on. So I ordered all 3, plus the belt tensioner ***'y, plus the serpentine belt, and spent a few hours replacing all of them. The dealer estimated $600; I spent about$130. Rented the belt tensioner tool kit from Autozone. I'm just an amateur, but it fixed the problem.

Wow...
that's a very interesting bunch of Easter eggs to hunt...

If you all want to just start stabbing at all the bearing
possibilities ... you are off to an impressive start...

Needless to say... ISOLATING the "noise" is
of paramount importance...!!!

A real MECHANIC would use a stethoscope to listen to
the various items... If you are really careful... old time mechanics just used a long stick or dowel (so long as it was kept out of the many pulleys and fan blades...
I was NOT AS LIKELY TO GET JAMMED STRAIGHT
THROUGH THOSE EARS... at a very high rate of speed.
(stethoscope is just worlds safer)

You all left out the A/C pump... & clutch... water pump

Not accounting for ALL internal engine bearings...

Notwithstanding my EVERY comment to the CONTRARY...

Would that I was in this SPOT... and needed quick answers
I'd seriously consider taking it to a reputable mechanic.

Hope this helps...

I have a 2005 Lincoln aviator that was making a loud whining noise so I took it to the ford dealership and they told me I needed a new idler pulley and belt and that it would be $350 to fix it. I want to...

yes, but if you look under your hood, you should be able to narrow down where the noise is coming from in that large engine compartment. also think about replacing the belt tensioner as well since you are replacing the belt with the idler pulley. its good preventative maintenance!

When I get up to about 65-70 mph with my 2004 Lincoln Navigator it makes a humming noise... very annoying.. Can anyone help me with what this is and how I can get it fixed?

Unfortunately, this is a somewhat common problem. Ford has issued several Technical Service Bulletins related to rear end noise. Without an extended warranty, this is something you will have to pay for.
TSB 05-23-3 11/28/05 REAR AXLE NOISE REPAIR FORD: 1997-2005 Expedition, F-150 2002-2005 Explorer LINCOLN: 1998-2005 Navigator 2003-2005 Aviator MERCURY: 2002-2005 Mountaineer
ISSUE:
Some vehicles may exhibit an axle whine or hum during acceleration, deceleration and/or cruise.
ACTION: An axle repair kit has been developed which incorporates most parts required for a comprehensive axle repair. The kit should be used instead of installing a complete axle assembly to repair an axle whine/hum. Replace Ring and Pinion with Axle Kit and Components.

Whining noise in engine

Checking the level of the power steering is a good start. The pump is mechanical, driven by the serpentine belt, and cannot be turned off. Your steering may seem normal but if you let it go, low fluid can destroy the pump.

2004 Lincoln Aviator thumping sound

The problem is the rear thermostatic expansion valve (TXV).
It is behind the left rear quarter trim panel. You can pull the panel back to access the valve to make sure that that is the noise. If so you will nedd to have AC system evacuated and replace valve and recharge the system. The part number is YF2Z-19849-AA.

I have a 2003 Lincoln AViator with 83000 miles on it. At this time I am hearing a whining noise which sounds like it is comming from the rear. It is louder when you are stepping on the gas and then seems...

this is your rear differential making noise. I would have it serviced and make sure fluid is clean. these are known for noisy diffs will need to be rebuilt. depending on how loud it can run a long time like this
