I have a 2004 aviator and now i hear a strange whining noise. noise will increase when I accelerate. Sound is coming from below where we add the power steering fluid. Can you help me figure out what this is? does anybody have similar problems with the aviator?. The sound is an airplane whining.
I have an 03 and around 30,000 miles the same thing happened to me . I took it to the dealer and the replaces the idler pully wich is what was making the noise .hope this helps you
It sounds like a bad bearing on either a alternater, the power steering pump, the a/c clutch,or an idler/belt tensioner for the serpentine belt. lift the hood star the vehicle and turn a/c on have someone run the engine to 1500-2000 rpm you should be able to hear which one of these is the proble and have it replaced. hope this helps. please rate this solution. thanks

It turned out to be a bad idler pulley (had slight play in it), but I couldn't really tell which one with the belt on. So I ordered all 3, plus the belt tensioner ***'y, plus the serpentine belt, and spent a few hours replacing all of them. The dealer estimated $600; I spent about$130. Rented the belt tensioner tool kit from Autozone. I'm just an amateur, but it fixed the problem.

Needless to say... ISOLATING the "noise" is
of paramount importance...!!!
A real MECHANIC would use a stethoscope to listen to
the various items... If you are really careful... old time mechanics just used a long stick or dowel (so long as it was kept out of the many pulleys and fan blades...
I was NOT AS LIKELY TO GET JAMMED STRAIGHT
THROUGH THOSE EARS... at a very high rate of speed.
(stethoscope is just worlds safer)
You all left out the A/C pump... & clutch... water pump
Not accounting for ALL internal engine bearings...

I have a 2004 lincoln aviator that is having the exact same problem and we just took it to brake masters and so far our power steering pump is broken...apparently. Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on!

I have a 2003 Avaiator with 80000 miles on it. I have a winning noise that sounds to me like the power steering pump is going. I have not taken action on repairing it yet but I find it interesting that other people have the same problem. I also have a growling noise coming from the rear. It sounds like a bearing of some sort. Has anyone experenced that?
