Check if the left and right hight adjustable stops are to high. If you put pressure above the latch and it works. This will most probably be the issue.

If the bulb are OK, I suggest check "underhood" the FUSES (page 133 and next) of the Volvo S40 Owners Manual; keep in mind that you have fuses for "low headlamps left and right", position 9 and 10...

12345 is the firing order

On the left side or passenger side it has a green cap Regards Chris

1 2 3 4 5 is your firing order staining at the engine from the front Regards Chris

one unit that operates ratio changes and is connected to the engine is that vacuum operated actuator on the transmission it is possible that that unit is failing , vacuum hose is leaking and that will cause ratio changes as the vacuum varies run the fault codes to check for wiring problems or VSS or TCM problems as well

the variable timing wheel should be on the inlet cam. the timing marks should align on cams upper of rear inner belt cover the crank upper of oil pump housing
