you should havehad instructions supplied with the bars. are they second hand if so what make are they? many different manufacturers out there and most fit different to each other ie fixings are different.

Sounds like the carburetor may be dirty i.e. fuel bowl , or line. Clean fuel line and carb and see if that helps.

There is no DTC connector, it is accessed by the dash board.

Check the main fuse.The Virago 1100 has a 12v 20Ah battery with main fuse of 30A.Check if this main fuse is shorted.If not then also remove the main fuse for 10 minutes then refit it to its location.Then check.Main fuse is located under the seat.------ Check your kill switch on the right handle bar, Check the main fuse under the seat as well as the other fuses in the fuse holder under the headlight. ------------
The red/white wire is a power wire that supplies power to most of the bike through the main fuse located under the seat. It goes to the starter relay and to a number of relays located under the seat on the rear fender. It also powers the coils through the ignition fuse as indicated on the wiring diagram. You need to take a volt meter and check continuity to all the wiring where the red/white wire goes. Then you need to make sure you have 12 volts at the coils on the red/white wire. As for the loose wire, I would check the starter switch first, it is located by the battery box next to #1 (Rear) cylinder. ----------- Make sure you have power to the coils and to the Igniter unit under the gas tank. If you have power to both the coils and the Igniter, check the continuity of the grey wire from the igniter to the front coil and then do the same from the orange wire to the rear coil. If these are good, pull off the small plug on the igniter and check that the pickup coils read 155 ohms across each coil. Then check from each pin on the pickup coil connector to ground and this should read open. If you get a short, you have a bad pickup coil or a wire shorted to ground at the case opening where they go into the clutch housing. If these all check correctly, you probably have a bad Igniter unit. Don't forget to check the ignition fuse with a meter. ----------- Power for the igniter should come from the ignition fuse to the ignition switch through the kill switch and then through the relays you mention as neutral switch and the side stand switch. So you need to start at the ignition fuse and follow the red/white wire to find where you are losing +12 volts.------- before troubleshooting all this first check the main fuse under the seat.if the fuse checked out ok, then follow thi troubleshooting.This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Hi, before you spend your money, try to switch ignition coils betwen cilinders; if the now dead cilinder starts to roar , then you'll be sure that you have one dead ignition coil wich is cheaper than a cdi.

It sounds to me like your main jet or high speed circuits could be plugged up in the carb(s) or you could have water in the fuel. If you are reasonably mechanically inclined, I would suggest removing the carbs and giving them a good cleaning. You might want to give it a fresh set of plugs and a new air and fuel filter while you are at it.

I did this on my Vstar recently.

My solution was, engine off, ignition off. Hands off the clutch, Rock and downshift, rock and downshift a good half a dozen times to make absolutely sure you are in 1st gear. Now, still without touching the clutch, rock and VERY gently upshift. If you can push the bike back and forth without the clutch and the gears aren't engaging the engine, you're there. NOW turn on the ignition and pray for the green light.

you are almost certainly low on fuel in the main tank.
the tank only holds a few gallons from completely empty. reserve fuel is a gallon or so, which means that the main tank hold somewhere just under 4 gallons if i remember correctly. my sister had a 1989 virago about 14 years ago, and hers would do about 110miles before she had to fill up again if she was driving around town. look for the fuel tap at the bottom of the tank, and if this happens again, turn the tap on to the reserve setting. it will give you about 30 miles range before running out completely. this is just one of those bikes where you have to fill up quite often due to a small tank. hope this helps

have you checked your fuses? next thing is to check for voltage at your connecter. if now voltage start tracing wiring back to fuse block.

first check your battery...may show proper voltage but not enough cranking amps to engage the starter fully...try another battery,...if this isn't the problem it may be the starter itself
the leaking floats should be repaired as they may cause flooding and stalling once it is running

Your mixture is set too lean after the cleaning. Covering the intake forces a richer mixture. Any time you pop the carb apart, even if you put things back exactly the way they were, it has to be adjusted because tolerances change.

Either that, or you butterfly is stuck, though I seriously doubt that's the issue.

Those are your PRImary and REServe tanks, although it's actually just two valve openings at different levels in the same fuel tank.

The idea is to use the primary tank all the time and if the fuel level falls below the primary inlet the bike will stop as a warning that you're running out of gas. You can then use the reserve setting to get to a gas station.
