2010 Harley Davidson FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic Questions & Answers
Backfire on 2010 flstc?
Backfiring is caused by a lean air/fuel (A/F) ratio. A leaner A/F ratio takes longer to burn and will continue to burn in the exhaust, hence the backfiring. Is the bike stock, or have you changed the air cleaner or pipes? Both of these changes will result in a leaner A/F ratio. HD bikes with fuel injection already run lean to meet emissions requirements, so changing pipes, etc. will make the problem worse. If you have not made any changes to the bike, make sure that the fuel system is clean and you are using good quality gas. You can also have the bike's computer (ECU) remapped to run a little richer. Your dealer may be able to do this for you, or there are aftermarket ECU tuners available for your bike that can adjust the fuel map and ignition. These will give you the added benefit of more power and a cooler running engine.
1992 Harley-Davidson Softail Heritage Classic. What engine is this, engine # BLLN011421?
If the serial number on your motor doesn't correspond directly to an S&S motor, it's possible that the lower end, which includes the crankcase, might be a Harley Davidson component. S&S often manufactures performance parts that are compatible with Harley engines, including jugs and heads, which might be installed on a Harley lower end. This hybrid setup isn't uncommon in customized or modified motorcycles. It might be beneficial to consult with a motorcycle mechanic or a specialist familiar with Harley and S&S components to verify the specifics of your engine setup.

How to replace an Ignition switch
To prevent electrical damage always disconnect the battery before doing any work on electrics.
For that you will have to remove the seat to gain access to the battery cables. Remove the negative ground wire first, then the positive. Make certain they cannot bend back and touch the battery. I have wrapped them with a rag to be safe.
If your switch is mounted on the frame, there is a lock ring that pinches the switch to the bracket. Turn that counter clockwise, slip the switch out of the bracket and carefully remove the wires paying attention to the color coding. (If the wires do not have a quick disconnect, you will have to cut them and splice the new switch wires. I recommend twisting the wires and sealing with heat shrink tubing.) Slip the switch into the bracket and fasten it using the lock ring by turning it clockwise. There are wrenches made for that lock ring but if you don't have one, try putting a rag in the jaws of pliers and turn it that way. Now reconnect the battery with the positive cable first, then the negative. Test the new switch to make sure everything works. If OK, install the seat. Always pull up on the front of the seat to be certain it is seated in the bracket. If the seat is secured, you are ready to ride.
If your switch is mounted in the housing on the gas tank it is a bit more complicated but not terribly hard.
With the battery disconnected, remove the nut at the center of the instrument housing. That's the one between the switch and the speedometer. Lift the housing and remove the screws that pinch the switch to the housing. Have a second person help by holding the housing or lay a towel on the tank to prevent scratches. Disconnect the wires from the switch and connect the wires of the new switch. Pay attention to color coding. Install the new switch in the housing using the screws. Slide the housing back into position over the gas tank and install the hex nut. Now reconnect the battery with the positive cable first, then the negative. Test the new switch to make sure everything works. If OK, install the seat. Always pull up on the front of the seat to be certain it is seated in the bracket. If the seat is secured, you are ready to ride.

Engine stalls while idle Harley Davidson 2008 softail
Check the idle as it may be too low. It should be between 1000 +_50. If it is too low it can only be set with a computer diagnostic system like Digital Tech2 CHECK for DTC's if it is low. ALSO be sure you have a clean air filter and good fresh fuel. AND good/new spaqrk plugs. Remember even a good looking motorcycle spark plug may be no good in fact.
