1984 Honda VT 500 C Shadow - Page 7 Questions & Answers
1983 Shadow 500c has severe lack of power.
Why do you suspect the head gasket?
yes you should check if it has compression.
put another spark plug in the lead of the side thats not working, ground it on the frame and make sure it has spark.
How to replace fork seals on 1984 vt750 honda shadow
Most forks have a bolt underneath, usualy a hex key type, sometimes the nut inside the fork turns, and you then need very long socket extension to hold it tight.
Once this bolt is undone, the forks should come apart.
Sometimes, you can prise out the old seals, and slide the new ones on, without taking things apart.
The bike runs well but lacks power above 4000 rpm.
dirty air filter, fouled spark plugs, bad spark plug caps, weak coil, dirty high end circuit in carburetors, possible bad pulsar pick up or cdi box. start withe the least expensive fixes and work your way up. good luck
I need to know the type of oil and filter for an
Your Honda dealer can supply you with the correct oil filter. If you don't have a dealer near you, an auto store or farm store can usually order a Fram oil filter equivalent. DO NOT use car oil in your motorcycle, it will shorten wet clutch and transmission gear life. Honda recommends 10w-40 or 20w-50 weight oil with a JASO MA rating. Any oil that says "energy conserving" on the label should be avoided.
Wont rev up
Oh, a little reaserch answered that for me anyways. Cleaning out the spark plugs is always a good place to start, then you can move on to the fuel filter or carburator(if applicable)
Can the 500 be bored out, and how much is safe?
you need a machinist manual for that make--or visit a rebuild shop and get some basic info--100cc more is reasonable but its not really gonna make a power diference unless u do other changes--there are many books on biulding race engines
18 shadow 500, boggs out when redlined, both at
thats why u dont bring it there-pretty soon the cam chain bolt comes loose and warps ur valves and ull be doin a top end--engines hav tolerances designed by mechanics just as ur body does
Where do i put the transmition fluid
There should be a bung to undo on the right hand side of the engine, at the bottom of left side there should also be a window so you can see how much is in there, holding the bike level the fluid should be half way up the glass :) would just be normal oil rather than transmission fluid check with a manual. most engines just have engine oil :)
Why does the motor stall around 3000 rpm
dirty fuel filter or fuel pump not working, check that fuses are good.check for fuel pressure after the pump. Gravity feed may be enough to start but not enough to run proper. collapsed fuel line could be there as well.
Actually this a friends bike
The first thing i would do is to check out the spark plugs and replace them first, sometimes there can be a small hair line crack in the porcelain that will expand when it gets hot letting spark leak, this can also happen in your spark plugs wires. Try and replace all this first. Also remember that these pistons do fire at the same time so if one spark is weak it will bring the other piston down at the same time.
Ran out of gas and it wont start
check all your fuses especially the starter solenoid fuse which will usually have a spare mounted into the rubber holder ...trick is finding it.
Had my 84 Honda VT700c Shadow running just a week
First check the main fuse on the starter selonoid, if it is good, try wiggling the key back and forth, the switch contacts can get loose in these switches. Sometimes the retaining tabs break off, if this is the case you will have to replace the insert. The parts are available from Dennis Kirk, and you will have to remove the ignition lock to replace it.
83 vt 500 shadow: the carb on the bike is
hi,i might be wrong, but the first place i would start looking is the carbs, there are two of them and it has all the symptoms of imbalanced carbs,if you have a set of carb balancers then the job is relatively easy,if not, then you will have to take it to a shop to get done, the adjustments on the carbs are very very fine, the difference between running perfect and not running well is about 1/50th of a turn on the balance adjuster screw,if the carbs have been tampered with or as is normally the case,as the bike ages and all the parts start to wear the carbs will go out of balance, and it will severely affect engine performance, get the carbs tuned up and i am pretty sure you will have a new feeling bike when you get it back..hope this helps...cheers
