1982 Suzuki Gs 550 L - Page 3 Questions & Answers
A FRIEND GAVE ME A 1982 SUZUKI GS550L WAS PARKED
The neutral safety switch is out of adjustment. Most bike won't start unless it is in Neutral or the clutch lever pulled in. Get a new battery and charge it up full. The intake boots need to be replaced or it will run lean. That is why you need to chock it to get it to run.
Timing chain

great web site for these bikes
GS500E Wont Start when Hot
well this sounds like several things so here goes ,could be that the carbs are out of sinc ,or the timing or the valves , my best guess is that the timing and the carbs, my best advise is to get a manuel from the your local bike shop that is if you are able to work on this your self ,if you dont have exsperiance with bikes i would take it to a pro , as a biker your bike should never be done half assed your life depends on it being right .
Wont Start it dont act like it is getting power to
If the starter button does not result in the starter motor turning, you need to get the wiring diagram for your specific bike (maybe in the owner's manual?) and do some checking. Check out the starter circuit (wiring, connectors, safety switches/relays, etc.) to get familiar with where everything is located on the bike. Check that the battery is fully charged. Hook up a voltmeter to the negative post on the battery and the the positive probe to the starter motor terminal. Turn on the ignition and press the starter button. If the voltmeter indicates around 12-13 volts when the starter button is pressed, then the starter is in need of repair/replacement. If no voltage is indicated, you need to trace back through the circuits (starter solenoid, safety switches/relays, connections) until you do get 12-13 volts. The place where it stops is the trouble area.
I only get one hard click or clunk from my engine...
The starter drive gear may not be engaging the flywheel properly. Remove the starter and apply battery voltage to the post and the case. The starter gear should turn. Hold it down tight!
With no power to the starter,the starter gear should turn freely only ONE way.
Suzuki wont start
it's not the timing take the carbs off and rebuild them and replace all the rubber hoses and and the rubber rings that hold the carbs on and change the plugs then check your compression
BATTERY WONT KEEP A CHARGE
- Battery 2 or more years old? It may need to be replaced.
- Before charging, did you add water to fill each battery cell to nearly full? Distilled water works best.
- Did you use a 1amp or a 2amp charger or did you use a larger amperage charger? 1 or 2 amp is what you want.
- Is the charging system on the bike still working properly? Put a voltmeter on the battery and rev the engine. The meter should register 14+ volts.

Bike turns over but wont start.
The problem with a bike sitting around is that the inside of the tank rusts and the gas drys up leaving a very unwanted residue of varnish in the carbs. The repair is going to be a bit of a project and very frustrating.
Remove and drain the gas tank. Remove the old petcock. Clean the rust out inside of the tank as best you can. Install the new petcock AND install an inline fuel filter.
Next, remove the carbs and disassemble for cleaning. I would spring for carb rebuild kits but only if it looks like the carbs can be saved. Often, abused carbs just need to be trashed and replaced. If you have never balanced and syncronised four carbs you are in for a very frustrating day. I am serious here > keep a fire extinguisher handy.
It's likely that the cost of fixing the bike will be more than the bike is worth, especially if you pay the dealer to do the repair. Your bike is 27 years old and most dealers will not work on anything more than 10 to 15 years old. Parts availability is a problem as well. Even if you get it running, what shape is the gearbox in? Are any of the shift forks bent? Is the clutch operational? This bike is a total shot in the dark and a risky investment at best.
I hate to be the person to tell the bad news but I would hate it more to see you put money and time into lost cause. I have the tools and experiance to fix bikes > I wouldn't want to touch this one. Best wishes anyway.

Battery installation
Hello,
The fused wire goes to the positive terminal, color is red.
Hope that helps.
Wont start
Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".
Your described problem based on the bike being a 1982 model could be varied, among them are:
- weak spark - not necessarily weak battery. Culprits could be loose loose connector to the CDI, low IGN +12 to the + terminal of the coil (check with a voltmeter while just switch on and when cranking/starting), or even a loose ground terminal. Check spark by removing plugs, reconnect the plugwires, let the threaded end touch metal part of engine, crank. Sparks should be strong;
- corroded/poor contacts in the ignition switch resulting to the above. You can test by running a jumper wire straight from the battery to the + terminals of the ignition coil;
- too lean air/fuel - plugs should be brownish in color;
- air or vacuum leak - resulting to the above and high or poor idling;
- unbalanced carbs - carb check/clean, verify air adjustment screw number of turns,
- compression low - have a compression check.
Would look forward to your updates. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
I have a 1980 Suzuki
clutch pushrod should just pull out as it should be a 2 piece clutch pushrod model, earlier models were 1 piece and you had to remove clutch cover and pressure plate to remove. hopefully the seal is ok.

In is lean out is rich, but these are low speed adjustment and will not cause your symptom.
