1983 Suzuki Gs 550 L - Page 3 Questions & Answers
I have a 1983 Suzuki GS550L and I need to replace
Before you purchase this part ( hoping you didn't ) , you know that this bike is 26 /27 yrs old and unless it's worth 4 times the money you payed for it - I suggest you look into a new bike, every year that goes by parts are reduced by the Company - you might find a replacement ( with a manual ?).
Unless this bike is one of a kind, you have to THINK WHAT CAN GO AFTER THIS OR HOW MUCH MONEY DID I SPEND IN THE PAST 26 YRS - I'm sure you enjoyed your ride . For all N all you'd be better off with a new ride. Best of luck
The bike runs for almost precisely 15 minutes, then dies
it may not be the coil. i got a bike that didnt run right, it came with box of spare parts and about 5 extra sets of coils. when i was talking to some buddies about what my bike was doing they told me that it was the coil. then i was talking to another buddy that used to work on motorcycles professionally he told me to check the points. I checked and adjusted them and now it runs just fine. so what i am trying to say is check your points before buying new coils.
WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE OHMS READING IS ON THE STATOR
I know you want to know that, but there are two components to check: the alternator and the regulator. Connect a 12v light bulb to the alternator output wires, and if it lights when you crank it up, then the regulator is probably the problem. HOWEVER! Make sure that there aren't bad fuse holders or a bad wire connection. The brass fuse clips get brittle with age ("hydrogen embrittlement" is the term) and can look perfectly fine until you try to pop out the fuse and things just crumble.
Electrical problem
Suzukis aren't the only bikes with this problem. Certain Hondas are notorious for stator shorting.
If you can get the temperature down you will be able to get MANY more miles out of the stator. I'm referring to the stator temperature.
If you have any heavy load accessories (extra lights, boom box, etc.) you will need to get rid of them. If the battery is ancient it will really load up the alternator. Check out the rectifier. My last BMW had a small daylight running headlight that drew about a third of the night time headlight wattage.
If all is well electrically, install an aftermarket oil cooler on the engine.
I have a 1980 Suzuki
clutch pushrod should just pull out as it should be a 2 piece clutch pushrod model, earlier models were 1 piece and you had to remove clutch cover and pressure plate to remove. hopefully the seal is ok.
