How does the clutch cable
The clutch cable hooks to the screw assembly. The assembly is bolted to the case. When the clutch lever is pulled in, the center part of the assembly, ( a giant screw mechanism ), pushes on the clutch rod which then pushes on the outer clutch pressure plate to separate the clutch plates. The clutch springs supply the pressure to push the clutch lever outward thus engaging the clutch to move forward. I hope this answers your question. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

Would like to know how to disconnect the clutch
Best way is to dissconect the clutch cable at the handlebar first, lossen off the adjuster on the handle bar and take the cable out of the lever. Then the cover should come straight off, should be no need to disconect the cable from the cover in order to get it off.
Runs for awhile then stalls and petrol fluds out
The float in the carb is sitcking open and the carbs should really be rebuilt. The float will open when the fuel in the carb is low and when the carb fills up -the float will raise up shutting off fuel to the carb. You can try turning on the fuel on the tank and take a long blunt object and actually knock on the bottom of the carb and try to release the stuck float. If the carbs are half way decent then this will probably work. If they are "gummed up" then removal and cleaning is necissary. I hope this helps -I've encountered many of these-hope this helps!
1985 suzuki 550 l has set in a barn for 10 years
Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Most of your described concerns are brought about by the absence of the battery. Install a new/known to be good battery into the electrical system and ensure that the terminals/connections are clean & tights.
Postback updates.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.
1980 GS 550 Suzuki Clutch Cable Broke
you do need to take the clamp on section of the shiffter off. You shouldn't loose any oil unless you have other issue. just remove the outer cover and you will see where the cable connects, piece of cake. good luck
Needs new coil
I dont know were you are but in the UK the tyres will cost around £120 and the coil in the region of £30. The coil is very easy to fit. Without the right equipment the tyres need to be done at a shop. Good luck.
I bought a 1985 GS 550 LF. It had been sitting
Gas pouring out of the carbs means the float pin are not sealing in thus the over flow.
Go a little down thn .77in , best would be to bench set them.
Take a pipe say from the tank to the feed pipe of the carbs (best would be to remove the tank and place it higher on your work bench to get the gravity flow to the feed pipe of the carbs)
Allow the flow to the carbs and monitor the over flow, see which carbs over flow, remove the float bowl and reset the float and let it go a little less thn .77in, refit the bowl and retry the feed in and recheck..you will come to a point where gas wont over flow, open the bowl and see the level of the gas , it should be covering the jets, but remember that since you will have the float bowl out the gas will show low as when its submersed, the jet stem in the float bowl pushes the gas level up so dont get mixed up when you see the level low , i am sure you will be able to judge it for yourself.
I had the same problem in myYamaha(seca) XJ750R !981and finally managed to win over the problem going over it the way I explained.
Hope this helps! Good luck.

Carb issues
Sorry to hear about your carb issues. Two possible issues that come to mind are
(1) fuel level in the bowl most float assemblies are made of brass and have a small tab which applies pressure on the float needle. If this tab is not adjusted correctly the fuel will not shut off when the float reaches its maximum height. The tab can be bent to apply pressure at just the right moment. You can verify this by doing a bench test, with the bowl off. So much nicer to know before going through all the work of putting it back on the bike.
(2) Check the buoyancy of the float itself many of the old-school foam ones dont have enough umph to close the needle all the way. If you have the brass style floats make sure you dont have a leak. ( submerge the float then check for air bubbles also shake the float and listen for gasoline within) Check with GDL Cycles they can help you with those hard to find parts for many old school Japanese bikes.
Transmission bearing?
i have known people who have had the same problem, they say to replace bearing or it will get worse and might sieze up the engine
I have a 1980 Suzuki
clutch pushrod should just pull out as it should be a 2 piece clutch pushrod model, earlier models were 1 piece and you had to remove clutch cover and pressure plate to remove. hopefully the seal is ok.
