My 1200 gs adventure cuts out whilst driving. It will cut uot and when the lights come on it starts again. What can it be?

Most likely cause is the ignition switch. It is made up of 2 small micro switches that corrode, causing the symptoms you describe. First remove these two screws. 25793396-zdnm1rbkvdzsdrhmgigr5a3o-1-0.jpg Then these 2. 25793396-zdnm1rbkvdzsdrhmgigr5a3o-1-2.jpg Once the unit has been removed it can be replaced. I would suggest a new one, available from BMW. Part number is 61 31 8 543 110 Alternatively, it can be dismantled and cleaned. This is what it looks like once the cover is removed. 25793396-zdnm1rbkvdzsdrhmgigr5a3o-1-5.jpg At times however, there will be corrosion or damage like this. 25793396-zdnm1rbkvdzsdrhmgigr5a3o-1-9.jpg Then it is better to replace the unit.

With modern spark plugs and unleaded fuel you can easily change them only every 50 000 miles

Engine rattled

That is not the engine rattling. That is the gearbox bearings that need to be replaced. There is also a cushion drive in the gearbox that may need to be replaced.

I have a gs 1200 the moter turning and the ligts on the screen are on but it wont start what can be the problem

Might be a fuel delivery problem like the fuel pump.POP the spark plugs out and squirt some fuel into the combustion chamber ,replace the plugs and crank the bike over. If it barks you know its a fuel problem. If not pop out one spark plug ,ground it,and yourself and have someone hit the start button. If you don't get a spark then you know its an ignition problem. Its a process of elimination to get to the problem.good luck

Hi I was driving my 2008

Hi.

Check if there is power to the dash. If there is no power at all, check battery terminals, battery, then fuse box and ignition. You will need to check voltages in this order, use a test lamp. Ensure that battery cables are well tightened.

If the dash comes on, but the bike does not crank, it is either a problem with spark or with fuel.

If you have not done it yet, test the kickstand switch. The switch can be tested reading Volts at the two contacts with ignition on. If kickstand is up there must be volts on both ends. The part can also be tested by jumping it. Here a picture:

If the kickstand switch is not the culprit, check the fuel pump. Test fuel pressure using a gauge like this:Lisle 20300
Fuel pressure with bike revving a bit will be 40/45 psi.

Check if there is spark when you crank. If there is no spark check distribution.

Have also a look at the throttle potentiometer. See here replacement cover and pot.

Regards.

Ginko.

After starting my 2009 BMW

The fuel gauge sensor on my 2008 1200GS Adventure was defective and needed replacement. On my first ride after buying it new from the dealer it showed full (all bars), but ran out of gas on my first ride. No further problems, and it is now 40,000 miles.
Hope this helps.
