1. Grease the fitting on the side of the neck
2. Use chisel and hammer to bend back the lock tabs on steering stem nut, then remove the nut and plate, if any. The spanner nut for the adjustment is visible at full lock right and left positions. The spanner nut should be adjusted so the forks return to the center position, when released from full lock position. The Stem nut should be tightened to between 60-80 ft. lb.s .
3. When doing the adjustment, it is necessary to have any windshield, fairing or accessories mounted in order for the adjustment to be correct.
4. If any problems with wobble, vibrations, etc. check that the tire tread hasn't worn unevenly, i.e., no cupping or high spots.
How to remove air filter on 2001 fxst
Remove the screw and air cleaner cover, remove the three TORX screws and the bracket from the filter element, gently pull both rubber breather tubes from the back of the element, remove the filter element and gasket, replace the filter element if damaged or if filter media cannot be adequately cleaned, gently pull the breather tubes from the breather bolts on the backplate, clean the filter element by washing the paper/wire mesh air filter element and the breather tubes in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, do not strike the filter element on a hard surface to dislodge dirt, allow the filter to either air dry or blow it dry from the inside with low pressure air. Do not use air cleaner filter oil on the Harley-Davidson paper/wire mesh air filter element. c. Hold the filter element up to a strong light source and if light is uniformly visible through the element, it is sufficiently clean.
1999 harley davidson softail standard won't start back fires
You have a wasted spark system and you are getting fuel. Probably you need new spark plugs as even if the old ones look good and might spark out of the engine it appears they will not spark properly under compression pressures and the fuel that remains unburned is ignited when the spark plug fires on the exhaust stroke when there is not pressure and therfore teh backfires.

On my 88HD Fxstc the starter will not ingage
If the starter spins but the engine does not turn over, usually it's a bad starter drive (Bendix). On the 88 year model there is a solenoid that pulls the starter drive into engagement with the ring gear on the outer clutch drum. Inspect this linkage. Look for a broken pin that holds the return spring on (return spring in the bottom of the primary) or a broken "Y" piece that moves the starter drive outward. If the starter bendix is bad, it will turn freely in either direction while holding the shaft from turning. It should turn freely in one direction and lock up in the other. This test is not conclusive as you cannot put the same amount of resistance on the drive as your engine can. The little nut on the end of the starter shaft has left handed threads on it. Chuck the starter drive in a vise with aluminum jaw protectors on it and remove the nut. The starter drive (Bendix) will slide right off. Buy a good replacement, not the cheap Chinese junk. Runs hot what
put a oil cooler on it. don't sit around idleing or around town riding it is a air cooled engine
Wont start battery good
If the starter turns, but there is no battery power reaching the headlights and no battery power reaching the ignition system there is a fault in some part of the electrical system used by both headlights and the ignition system, but not the starter motor. Check all the fuses, if any are bad or dirty replace them then try again, then check the new fuses to see if they have 'blown' if they have you have a serious short-circuit in the wiring or other electrical component, replace the fuses again and remove all the headlight and tail bulbs and try again.
