Hi, Jim the vast majority of speedometer issues is caused by the speed sensor and or the wiring, a faulty speedometer sensor and or connection will automatically interrupt proper turn signal and flasher operation. On Sportsters the sensor is located on top of the engine case behind the rear cylinder, on big twins, it's located on the right side of the transmission case between the starter end cap and the transmission top cover. Remove the bolt/screw that secures the sensor and lift the sensor out of the case. Inspect it for damage and contamination, if there appears to be no damage wipe the end of the sensor clean and reinstall, you can go for a short quick test ride to see if the speedo is working. If the issue still exists grab your test light and unplug the harness connector from the sensor, check for power (red wire) and ground (black wire) continuity coming from the speedo, there is also the connector that plugs into the speedometer, also, look for corroded, broken or loose pin/sockets. If everything checks out OK then replace the speed sensor.

You need to check you rear brake master cylinder. Something is wrong with this as your rear brake is not working. The brake light for the rear brake is activated by a pressure switch whereas your front brake light is activated by an normal push/release switch. Fix your rear brake problem and the brake light problem will be repaired as well.

It may be time to rebuild your rear brake master cylinder.

Hi Brian, running on the lean side, exhaust and or intake leaks, exhaust valves not seating properly, retarded timing, and extended periods of high speed driving all contribute to exhaust pipe discoloration. This is another reason why heat shields are installed on pipes to cover normal discoloration. You might be able to slow the process down or halt it completely by increasing main jet size until you achieve a light tan color on your spark plugs. The down side of larger main jets is lower MPG. In the future if you ever install new pipes, there is a commercial product out there called Dyno Kote that can be installed on the inside of the new pipes to greatly reduce bluing. There is also a company named Hard Krome that sells a double walled exhaust system that guarantees pipes and mufflers not too blue. Finally, there is a commercial product called Blue-Job that can remove bluing if properly applied, but also removes a micro thin layer of chrome, so only use this product once a while. If you have any other questions about exhaust pipe bluing, or any other issues your Electra Glide may be having you can reach me at xlch@mail.com. For more information about your question, please visit the websites below. Good luck and have nice day.

Hi Jay, you have a hard/dead short that should be easy to find generally they are the easiest. Time to get out your test light and connect it to the power side of the, circuit breaker or the blown fuse receiver, start by tracking the out bound wire towards the ignition switch and beyond if necessary, when the test light quits lighting you are very close to your short.
