Is it a bad fuel pump
Check the battery if it is at 12volts all the time, because a weak battery can cause starting issues.
If the battery is ok and fit thn you will have to proceed to check the fuel pump and the starter too.
Hope this helps!
Am I going to have trouble with the Stator if I
If you operate the driving lights only while at speeds and not idling for extended periods of time there should be not a problem. For a check to ease your mind, after you install the driving lights, start the bike then check the battery voltage at an idle. It should be in the 12.5vdc to 13.5vdc range. Now turn on the driving lights and check the voltage again. If the voltage drops lower than 12.2 volts at an idle, increase engine speed to about 2000 rpm and see if the voltage increases to about 13.5vdc or higher. If it does, just remember not to idle with the driving lights on for more than a red traffic light cycle.
Black smoke and fouling plugs
The black smoke is a tell-tale sign your running rich , this is confirmed by your fouled plugs. Possible simple item: is the choke stuck on? If not I expect you'll need to dig in to the carbs, give them a good rebuild and retune them.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom
1986 Gold Wing Interstate no spark. Had it runing
I wish I knew what kind of condition the bike was in. If you have no spark I would start with the coils for a loose or corroded connection both negative and possitive. Make sure the battery is good. You may have charged the battery and have 12 volts but if there is a bad cell in the battery and not enough amps your starter may turn but you will not get enough amps for the coils to fire the plugs. When my Intruder battery get a little low my plugs do not fire hot enough and fowls out. The battery is new so when I recharge or keep my trickel charge on I have no problems.
Ive Just Bought GL 1200 Interstate Gold wing and
If you have dual brakes on the front, one side may be applying more pressure to one or the other side. You may need the brake pads replaced. I also suggest having the brake fluid replaced and system checked.
Hello! Am having an odd issue with a 1985 GL1200.
Go into the carbs again and clean them real good. Take every parts off and clean-clean-clean. Also make sure the the intake boots are tight between the carbs and the boot. If there is a air leak it will stay at a higher RPM for a few seconds and return to normal. To test this take some carb cleaner and spray around the boot where it attached to the engine and where the carbs are clamped. Start the engine and if spay. If it changes rpm's up or down then you have a air leak.
Stalls at stop lights
I would run a can of Techron or Seafoam fuel conditioner through it to see it that resolved the problem.
1984 GOLDWING1200GL WONT KEEP A CHARGE NEW BATTERY WIRES GOOD GRO
Have you checked the output of the stator? When the bike is running above idle - say 3000 rpm's, you should see a voltage across the battery terminals of at least 14.1 volts.
If the stator is good, then I would next look at the amount of lights or accessories installed.
Also, if I remember correctly, the early 80's GL's were notorious for having a problem with the 3 yellow wires coming from the stator. The plastic connector would eventually corrode and either kill the stator or burn completely.
