Normally there's a small (almost unnoticeable) black button you can push located just beneath the trip meter. And it'll erase previous miles and set it back to zero

About 45 miles per gallon or so. But this depends a lot on the mechanical condition of the bike, driving condition, even altitude.

I have owned both those bikes. I had that exact year VT. it should ride fine. there must be a problem with yours. check the tire pressure & make sure the brakes aren't hanging, see itf the forks are bent or if the neck bearings are dry or too tight. my main issue with the VT is the performance, it has decent torque but don't try to pass at highway speeds unless you can just throttle by. downshifting doesn't do much for it either.. I know it is a cruiser but it leaves lots to be desired. the stock seat will have you looking for the nearest rest stop! it has nasty vibration felt through the foot pegs and grips. cruisers are supposed to be comfy. I give it one compliment it is a reliable bike, that old 73 you had will run circles around that VT and is way more comfortable...trade it off asap :)
