1997 Suzuki VS 800 Intruder - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
What type of oil does 1997 Suzuki VS 800 take
Depends on the driving.
If you live where it is really cold ( it gets down to O degrees Fahrenheit), you should probably use a 5W-20.
If the lowest temperature you drive in is 32 degrees, 5W-30.
If you drive in above 50 degrees, you could use 10W-30.
These "weights" ( viscosities ) are standard for most gasoline vehicles.
Cooling fan is not coming on. no temp light though
Is the engine even overheating? Suzuki V-Twins are notorious for running cool. If the fan motor is working (test by sending power through the leads) then test across the temperature sending switch with an ohmmeter. First measure the resistance cold. Then run the engine until it's completely warmed up and measure again. IT should read a different resistance, +/- 300 ohms. If there's no difference the best way to verify after that would be to set up a rig to hold the switch in a pot of boiling water; it should definitely read a difference at 212 degrees. Of course, with any 18 year old mechanical device your mileage will vary.
HOW TOO CHANGE MY TIRES
I personally would buy the Repair Manual. I am a Harley Mechanic and always use the Repair Manual. By using the Manual you will never have to ask any more questions unless really serious. The Repair Manual is a Mechanics best friend. I’m happy to help further over the phone at

Cam timing 97 suzuki vs800
both cams are timmed of the rear piston at top dead center(make sure valves have a little freeplay, should move alittle, not tight)(timming mark shows r/f t in window)(window front of alternator cover) with the lines even with the head, arrows pointing forward.manual has a good detail if u have one. cam lobs should be down on back and about 10 o'clock on front.
How do you get to the coolant reservoir on a 1997
coolant reservoir is behind front air cleaner under tank. u have to remove the tank to get to it, but there is no fill port. it's more of an overflow. if u look above the radiator u should see the back of it, it is black.
Not getting full power
ur bike needs a tuneup its 13 yrs--test the batt for holding a 12v charge--may need new plug wires also--inspect coil and other parts of elec system--chec out carbs jets and float area specially the setting--buy a repair manual!
It seems that my clutch fluid is getting hot and
sounds like the clutch needs to be adjusted, loosen the clutch adjusting jam nut and turn the adj screw clockwise untill the bike bearly starts to creep forward, then back off the screw 1/4 turn, tighten jam nut and you should be good to go
Suzuki VS 800 Intruder won't start unless jumped.
Question edited for full make and model names.
Question moved to model category.
Could be a bad relay and they are easy enough to rest. The problem with bikes is corrosion. Involved in starting, is the battery, the battery connections, the starter button, the relay, and the starter solenoid and its connections. Break all the connections, clean with a wire brush until shiny, smother them with Vaseline and do them back up. Vaseline stops oxidization and also transmits electricity. Ideas in this link from owners regarding corrosion.
