Find a long straight road that climbs fairly steeply get into top gear at about 40 MPH then try to slowly accelerate. If the clutch is slipping you will find that the revs increase but the speed does not. It is not a good idea to rev to the max in each gear it can damage the engine and gearbox. Have you checked the clutch cable and the adjusters also is the clutch release mechanism (push rod I think in your bike) working correctly. A poorly adjusted or damaged, un-lubed cable, with no free play at the lever will not help a clutch to operate properly. I would also have the clutch checked as it could be the friction plates are worn and/or the spring tension is incorrect. (Wrongly adjusted or weak springs will also not help the situation)

When going about 50 mph, turn throttle fully open. If clutch is slipping, engine will rev but speed will not increase very much.

The stock battery is a lead-acid battery. The battery is a FTX9-BS. You can call any motorcycle shop and ask if they have one in stock. See if you can get a crossover in a gel-battery. The gel battery has a two year warranty while the acid battery only has six months. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

you said it all, most bikes have a master link, if not you need a chain breaker, which you can also use if the new chain you purchase is to long. lift bike on center stand, loosen axle nut, then loosen chain adjustment screw nuts on both sides and turn them so the wheel/axle moves all the way forward. connect the old chain to the new chain and pull it through (while gearbox is in neutral). adjust the chain adjust screws on the axle the same amount indicated by the markers on swing arm until chain has a deflection of half inch up and down in the middle at the tightest spot, try turning the wheel a few cycles to find it. then lock axle nut then tensioner lock nuts.

yes, the clutch plates are starting to wear out, thats one of the first signs. It'll just get worse at lower speeds. replace the plates theyre cheap for a 2000 katana

There's a short circuit in the wiring or the ignition coil.

if the horn is siezed then replace it , not expensive

fuses blow because of an excessive current draw. Check for wire damage and check that the bulbs are not causing a dead short in the bulb holder. Check that you have a single contact bulb and not double as in tail/ stop lights

Hi there,if you go to You Tube and search for "suzuki katana chain tightening" there are some short videos as to what to do.

Follow the positive cable (biggest wire) from the+ side of battery to the solenoid.Continue from there on the other big wire and it will take you to the starter.

To test the starter place he bike in neutral. Jump from the positive terminal of the battery to to the big wire that is connected to the starter. Use heavy gauge wire or it will burn up
Do not clamp this test wire on.
If the starter does not work its bad. IF IT DOES THEN THE SOLENOID IS BAD.

repeat if required, there are rust arresting products abailable that encapsulate the rust. or rust oleum if nothing else.

Seems you are running entirely off your battery.
Indications are a suspect lighting or source coil is shorting. Resistance test will show discrepancies. Data is available on-line, search technical/electrical manuals from Clymer or Haynes. An auto shop sells cheap multi-meters than you can use. It is a stationary test and will identify individual component problems. As rectifier/regulator, cdi box and wiring/switches/connections all have an effect. These test are outlined within these publications. Cheers (and don't get caught)

i would look to replace the regulator/reciefier...as it sounds like its not chargeing the battery...check this 1st...if its ok...then look at the alternator

Yes it definitely could be the kickstand switch. Does it have a clutch switch? The overnight flooding isnt normal either, beware of that.

Your first thing is to check for dirty terminals. Once OK, then take it to an auto-electrician and get him to run a multi-meter over it. In about 5 secs he will diagnose your problem and generally it is a freebie service. It sound as if your battery is on its way out. Sounds like the battery has lost its capacity, also if you have the kickstand down when you put it into gear the engine will shut off. Try this, put jumper cables on the battery, hook it up to a car that is running, start the bike, put the kickstand up while holding the bike up and holding the clutch in, put it in gear. If it continues to run, disconnect the cables and see if it stalls. If it does, you need a new battery! Please rate this as helpful if it was.
