2001 Suzuki VL 1500 Intruder LC Questions & Answers
Lucas oil?
SAE 10W-40 API Grade SE or SF. Don't use oil that is not made for bikes because the viscosity at hot temperatures could be all wrong and will eventually cause damage.
Get a manual as that will have the info you need or, if you cannot wait, try ringing a local dealership and ask to speak to their mechanic.

1999 Suzuki 1500 ignition fuse blows when I turn on key
sound like someone been jump starting from a car battery.make sure fuse are in tight.you may try taking the tank off then trace down wiring.flexing the harness to see if there are hard spots.wires may have melted together.
Where do you add oil
Look on the right side where the oil level site glass is. There is a chrome cover to the left of that which is held on by two bolts. You have to remove that cover to add oil. Ride your bike for a few minutes to get the oil warm,it's NOT a good idea to let it just sit there running since its air cooled. Shut it off and let it sit for a little to allow the oil to run back down; then make sure the bike is level when you check the site glass. A mechanics mirror, or someone sitting on the bike holding it upright is helpful. Do NOT go over the full line ,just below it won't hurt. It holds just over 4 quarts .
REPLACE SPRING ON KICKSTAND
Stretch the spring so you are able to insert coins or washers in each coil. The spring will probably be long enough to place it on the pins. remove the coins/washers. Go ride.
2001 vl 1500 intruder lc started smoking around the engine and drips a little oil
gday there kenneth this sounds like the seller before was trying to stop the engine from smoking ,this is a old trick you do not put much oil in to the motor so the compression when it pushes past the worn rings pressurerises the engine cases and pushes oil out of the breather hole into the airbox this is why when you filled it and put the hose back to the air filter it was smoking .best thing to do is check your spark plugs and see if there oiled up if they are see if you have a mate with a engine compression gauge and check the compression this will more than likely be it .if not take it too your dealer and let him do the test for you .hope this helps cheers
Exhaust pipes gets beat red and the cluth went out
The thing that will make your pipes turn red while running (usually under load) is your carbs being dirty and the bike is running way to lean. getting to much air and not enough fuel. if it was running rich to much fuel the bike would sputter and backfire and foul plugs. if you keep running it like that you will likely blow a hole through the piston or the head gasket. you most likely need a carb clean and sync.
if the bike was sitting and not stored (fuel drained and cylinders fogged) there is probably sludge in the carbs. a carb clean is not something for a novice. its easier to pay a shop to clean and sync them. not cheap but almost always the better way to go if you do not have carb experience.
The clutch going out is a separate issue. if the clutch does not engage at all when you release the clutch lever then that could be a failure of the clutch basket or the springs that push the plates together. the clutch is under the right side cover near your right foot. if the clutch is grabbing but slipping it is worn clutch plates and springs and can be repaired with a clutch rebuild kit.
either way you end up taking off the clutch cover. not a hard job if you are handy. rebuild kits come with instructions.
