What causes it to hiccup when pulling away
There are two things that may cause this that you cand check.. the first is an intake leak. I use a propane torch to check for leaks, less messy than WD40. Start the bike.. warn it up.. get it to idle.. now put the torch near the rubber intakes with it on.. if the engine "smooths out" .. you have found your problem. Next is dirt in the carb or filter.. also check the exhaust sytem for leaks.. stock jets today tend to make bikes run too lean in IMO and is done to keep the EPA happy with emissions and fuel consumption. Sometimes going one jet size larger will get rid of a cough. You will have to know how to read plugs to do this.. also your bike may have clips on the needle in the carb you can adjust the carb that way too.. usually there are 3 positions.. if you have a CV carb check to see the carb is working properly. A small leak in the rubber can only get worse. I do this by lifting the slide and then letting go.. it it drops quickly with no resistance.. there might be a problem.. it should have a little delay in dropping to operate right. Jim
Triumph Legend 1998 same as Thunderbird 900motorcycle running badly.
Was the bike working okay after the overhaul? Mis firing due to bad setup or very bad fuel.If it has not run right since the work was carried out ask the repairer to take a look.
If it only started to go awry after using wheap fuel, (it should still be of uniform quality with other fuel,)
I would drain the tank and refill with premium. Try not to get any air into the system if you do this, makes life easier
GOOD LUCK

Were is the drain plug for the forks
I'm not particularly familiar with your bike, most bikes the oil has to be dumped out of the top. Some have drain plugs at the very bottom, but with a little extra work you should take the tubes off and thoroughly drain and flush. Removing the tubes is pretty straight forward, supporting the front, removing bolts and nuts and speedo cable. I always recommend to spend a couple bucks and buy a service manual from say amazon. It's the best $$ you'll ever spend.
I cannot over emphasize to be OH SO careful taking the top plug out, it's spring loaded and capable of taking a couple teeth or pranging your nice car parked in the garage. A manual will lay it all out, how to inspect and type/quantity of oil. With only 2 wheels keeping you off the pavement, an inexperienced job on one is ill afforded.

Fitting gear sharft
There are at least two gear shafts, please specify. In general, this kind of repair requires someone that has proper knowledge, training, and tools to complete properly.

You are buying someone elses problem without ever having riden the motorcycle.
..There could be more problems... My answer would be no. I would offer him no more than $1500 and have HIM make the repairs on the bike. Take it or leave it...They are plenty more used bikes on the market to select from.

Hi,,remove and clean the carb. before doing this you might want to check the air screw on the side of the carb, with the bike running turn the screw half a turn in and give the bike a rev,if it bogs more, turn the screw half a turn out and see if throttle response improves.

It could be that the coil is shorting out once it gets hot? Reason the insulation of the coil wire is broken and whilst cold the wires are apart, as the wire gets hotter it will expand which could cause the wires to touch (Shorting the system). If you swap the two coils over and the problem is then caused on the other cylinders it is a fair bet you have identufied that as the problem!

Where can i get a manual or blueprints of the 1950
There are many workshop manuals (aftermarket) available through "Whitehorse" -- or go on Amazon and try to find a Triumph Twins restoration manual that would have photos of early pre-unit models like the Thunderbird. [[www.whitehorsepress.com/ ]]
