2001 Triumph Triumph Bonneville - Page 2 Questions & Answers
I have a 2001 Triumph
The motor in this bike is fueled thru a pair of Keihin FCR39H carburetors - no electronics on them of any kind so no heating sensors of any kind. It does have a heating element in it, but that is for other thing, unrelated.
In it the choke function is replaced by the idle lever that changes the position of the main jet and thus acting like a choke. If you have idle problems then the carburetors are badly adjusted - take your bike to a proper repair shop. If you want you could try to do that yourself following this

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
Yes it can be a vacuum issue. The bike may have worn or loose vacuum hoses which can cause it to fail. Please observe carefully and replace worn vacuum hoses. I strongly suggest that you replace the plugs and plug wires too for you may have fuel flooding which can cause backfire too.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
My 2001 triumph eats voltage
Stator needs to be replaced, never heard of any being rebuilt . i'm not saying you can't . Just don't
know why you would. If it is not putting out correctly it will strain the regulator causing it to burn out
in a short period of time . if you go to all the trouble of pulling your stator off your engine, then you
should replace it.
My 900 legend starts fine,
Check the fuel cap breather is clear. It is a very small hole that can become blocked, pressurises the tank and stops fuel flow. You could try riding it with the fuel cap on loose as a check.
Good luck.
Turns over but won't start - spits only on full chook
Since it's on '01, if you've never cleaned the fuel filter, start there. Remove the tank, turn it over and remove the 2 bolts holding on the fuel tap. There is a small bag like filter in there. Remember how you take it apart. There are 2 rubber gaskets (reusuable) that have to go back correctly. The '01's have a problem with a bad gas tank lining and you will find chips of paint in the filter.
The bike sat for maybe 5 or 6 years.when I bought
I have never seen heaters on motorcycle carbs. Your carbs do sound like they have issues with the low speed *(or idle) circuit.
You could take the carbs off the bike and have them soaked in cleaning solvent and reassembled. This should do it. Did anyone at the dealer or repair shops do a complete carb overhaul/cleaning?
You shouldnt have to run the choke for more than a couple minutes under most driving conditions. Of course, factory carb jetting is almost always excessively lean. You can go on Ebay and get a Dynojet stage one jet kit for your bike too. Improved driveability with only a modest reduction in fuel economy. Cost about 90 dollars.
Good luck and be careful!
Oil seeping into air box
The crankcase breather ,for emission purposes, runs from the motor to the air box so the blow by is burned in the motor. Many bikes have what is called a pollution tube that runs from the box to just in front of the rear wheel. This is to drain the **** that does not get sucked into the motor (oil, water, etc) Place a pie tin or pan on the ground and pull the plug out of the tube and all the horrible gack from the air box will drain into the pan. This is periodic maintenance that never seems to get mentioned anywhere. Now you know.
How often should i oil the drive chain and clean
Use commercially available chain lubricant to keep the drive chain from ever running dry. Usually it will be necessary to lube the chain every 200 to 500 miles, depending on how hard your bike is ridden and the conditions it is operated under. Chain lubes available at your local motorcycle shop are far superior to using any other type of lubricant. They are formulated to not fly off and make a mess of your rear wheel, clothing, etc.
If given decent care, you can expect your drive chain to last 10,000 to 20,000 miles. Lubrication and proper adjustment are the keys to success. Ordinary cleaning is not necessary - except for off road bikes.
It is time to replace the chain when you can lift the chain from the sprocket and expose anything more than about 1/2 the length of any tooth on the sprocket.
How do I remove plugs?
THE ONLY WAY IS TO TAKE OFF THE FUEL TANK OOPS LIFES A ***** IT P--SES ME OF AS WELL BUT IT AINT THAT OFTEN .GOOD LOOK
Oxford grips
I KNOW EIGHT PEOPLE ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH DIFFERENT MAKES (THEY DONT WORK) INVEST IN A GOOD PAIR OF GLOVES.
GOOD LUCK.
What are the top end torque settings for a 1975 750 triumph bonne
The Base nuts are in the 26-28 ft/lb range and the head bolts are 18-20 ft/lbs. I see the T150 goes from 20-22 lbs. There is a sequence too. I usually snug everything up and work from the center bolt to the four bolts closest to the center bolt and then the 4 outside bolts. Triumphs are pretty forgiving, just don't over torque.. and remember to check the torque or re-torque once you have started the bike. Say, ride it a block or two and then re-torque. I like to put a load on the engine before re-torquing.
I have just snugged everything down by feel in the past with good results but then again you have to know what 22 ft/lbs "feels" like.. good luck..

When I ride my bonneville it runs fine even from
most likely its a coil since when they get hot and underload that is when they may miss you can check this with a spark lod tester they are not that expansive only about 10 dollrs at your locale auto zone, just load that ciol and see if it fails...
New bonded and steel plates fitted. Set up as per
It is important after replacing clutch discs that the 'free play' for the pressure plate is adjusted. First loosen the clutch cable adjuster so there is excessive free play on the clutch lever. Then loosen the locknut on the pressure plate adjustment rod and loosen the rod (turn it clockwise) until there is no pressure then turn it the other way until there is contact. Now turn it the other direction about 1/4 turn and while holding it there tighten the lock nut. After that is complete adjust the clutch handle so there is about 10mm free plat at the end of the lever.
