2001 Triumph Triumph Bonneville - Page 6 - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
I have a 1971 Boniville
The motor pings because the air/fuel mixture detonates. This is usually caused by the incorrect type of sparkplug (too hot) and/or carbon deposits in the chamber. This is enhanced by a leaner than normal mixture so check the carburetors first.
Install the correct type http://www.bikebandit.com/ngk-v-power-spark-plug?mg=766&t=1
If you get the same behaviour then it's the deposits - the pistons and the heads will have to be removed and thoroughly cleaned.

Broke down engine backfired
Check battery for a full charge. Put on charger and bring to full charge. Put load tester on the battery, checking for weak or dead cell. Check charging system to ensure it is working properly.

I need advice on adjusting
Hi, there are four adjustments that can be made to the concentric carburetor. The adjustments should be made in the following sequence with the engine at operating temperature. The bike should be in operating setup (i.e., Exhaust system installed, air cleaners installed, etc.).
- Adjust the Main Jet (Throttle at three-quarters to full open).
- Adjust the Pilot Jet. (Throttle up to one-eighth open)
- Adjust Throttle Cutaway. (Throttle one-eighth to one quarter open)
- Adjust Throttle Needle. (Throttle one-quarter to three-quarters open)
- Readjust the Pilot jet.

I have a 1977 silver
Hi realisticly its going to be expensive and 5000 is that us dollars or uk pounds ?
sounds very expensive when all your going to need initially is a good engine service a new set of tyres and maybe a chain and sprocket set and a check of the brakes what else is there on a bike?
theres getting it roadworthy and theres restoration to new which is very different

I have trouble with pulling
If you release everythng and spend some time with 20-50 oil filling the cable up with it. I suspect a strand of the bowden cable may have snapped inside the oter and oiling it should help to ease the problem.
A new cable should fix it permanantly.

What is the best way
Gaiters, I can assume you are referring to the rubber telescopic spring covers on each fork. There is only one way to change these I'm afraid and that means the forks have to come off the bike and come apart on the bench.Triumph never did anything easy! Take the oppurtunity to clean the forks, replace the oil seals and change the fork oil and inspect all the bits.(might as well) When installing the new gaiters the info I have says to use a light oil to help slip them into place by hand with an even pressure. No screwdrivers or pliers. Hope this has helped, nice to chat with another British fan, good luck with the job.Cheers

Re wired 1971 650 triumph up dated electrial on
Did you use a Typanium Recitifier? There should be no problems unless it is a used one. All the new ones I havew used just "bolt on" .. there are 5 wires. Check to see if you don't have a grounded wire some where.. try it with the head light off.. I usually wire my bikes to start with no head light with a 3 way switch.. once running I can then turn the light on. Go through an check all your wires again, you might just have a bad connection somewhere.. here is an excellent site .. Jim

T140E 1978 starts runs at idle, quits on take
if your model has a amel mark 2 the stand main jet is #200
needle jet #106
pilot jet #20
starter jet #35
the main jet doesn't come into it at take off unless you are pulling 5000 revs or more.
i would try raising the needles and checking the pilot jet
also try taking of with choke on this will let you know if it is starving for fuel.
try the choke one first before pulling the carbs down.

I have a 73 Triumph 650 motor in a rigid chopper
The stator is inside the primary cover (left side of the bike while sitting on it) Not sure what setup you have but if it has stock triumph charging equipment take it all off and replace that with a rectifier/regulator you will be better off with it... I have been running one on my 1970 Triumph 750 custom for about 10+ years with no trouble..... This only cost about $50 and well worth it!!!! Avoid the Mitty Max they are junk........ Best of luck.....
