I have a 1978 Yamaha DT175E. It is runnig rough

Check the choke to see it is not stuck on.
Something is causing the bike to run rich as you said.
Make sure the throttle slide isn't stuck and is working ok.
Try a smaller size jet.

Removing Engine barrel

Get a block of wood and put one end on the base of the cylinder then smack the block with a real hammer. Is the piston frozen in the cylinder? It may require a smack or two to begin to free it up.

Go to the site below and you can see a parts diagram. You will select the brand, year, model, etc... It has the part numbers and prices.

Please rate this as a top answer when the cylinder comes off. Thanks!

Oil in my air filter?

This is normal. The air filter is re usable on a lot of two stroke engines and you wash the filter and oil it lightly to help catch dust.

Timeing a yamaha 175 enduro

Without the year of the bike I am hampered. Lets assume it is an older bike and has a set of ignition points and not a CDI model.
.
Pull the cover off the shifter side of the engine. Remove the spark plug then turn the flywheel so you can see the points. Oil on them? Dirt, or rust? Next check the main bearing. Do not rotate the flywheel but instead hold the flywheel firmly and lift it up and down, left and right. Was there any movement or was the flywheel rock solid?
.
I am willing to bet that the points were dirty and there was a lot of play in the crank bearings. If so, you will need new crank bearings and seals plus new points and condenser. The engine needs to tear down into about 75 parts in order to replace the bearings. The job requires some special tools to remove the flywheel and clutch, plus a crankcase separator the split the gearbox.
.
This is not a job for the beginner. I suggest you have the shop do the work and also that you spring for 3 more bearings and seals plus a fresh cylinder bore, new piston and rings and a new spark plug. You now have a brand new engine that should run well and last for many years. Please rate this solution. Thanks

Float hieght for 1984 IT 490

not sure of the exact height, but if you hold the carb level with fuel hose attached and pushing float up with finger, turn on petcok and slowly lower the float until it is just above horizontal. at this point, gas should start to flow out of the needle & seat.

if float turns off gas too soon, then engine will starve.

if float doesn't turn off gas, then it will flow out of the carb overflow tube.

Trouble Starting

Hi,
This is an old 2 stroke, so chances are that the exhaust needs to be decarboned.
A good indicator would be that it got progressively more and more difficult to start with time.

Further, it would be a god idea to check the compression.

Also, you have not mentioned whether or not you have checked the auto lube system. This ensures that there is 2 stroke oil mixing with the fuel

Cheers

Oil in my air filter

Oil in the air filter could mean tht the piston rings are weak thus throwing oil from the breather to the airfilter via the breather pipe.
Some filters do require a little oil like thK & N ones maybe in your bike it was over filled if at all.
You can run the engine with out the air fliter and see if theres smoke coming out of the breather pipe, if it does thn you will have to replace the piston rings or more over rebore the block and replace the piston kit.

Hope this helps !
