I own a 1982 Honda CBX550. I have a loud squeal / grinding noise coming out of the instrument panel. It started on the original instrument panel without warning, though leading up the speedo was jumping around a bit. The panel/bike had done over 75,000 KM's by then. Reading threads on the internet everyone said to replace the speedo cable. I have replaced the speedo cable three times (100% right cables). Made no difference. Eventually the speedo gave out. So confident it is the instrument panel I buy another one (second hand, cannot get new parts for this bike). Install and have the same problem immediately out of both the speedo and tacho this time. I replace the speedo cable and tacho cable again, but no change. I am 100% confident that the Instrument panels are the issue, as when I have the tacho cable in, and move it around slightly at the instrument panel end the grinding noise goes away. Have I just been unlucky with the instrument panels? Do I need to try and find an instrument panel that is in better condition, or can I use graphite powder to inject in the ends of the instrument panel where the cables go in, on the back of it? I'm at a loss as to what to do.

The instruments have nylon gears and are prone to squealing when dry. Spray liberal amounts of PB Blaster into the cable ports. The graphite powder will not migrate to the gears. Repeat with the blaster spay if needed, do not over do the spray treatments. Spray some blaster in the cables too.

Now this one is only a guess at the solution. . . . . Have you removed the speedo and turned it upside down yet? Perhaps there is enough clearance between the needle and the plastic lens that you could shake the needle to the correct side of the pin. Speedos are not my strength but what the heck, it may be worth a try.

SOURCE: hot start lever siezed in plunger of crf 250 x carburettor

have had the same problem many times. spray carb cleaner into hole where the brass plunger is located give it a little time to let the cleaner work. put some force on the cable it may come out if not remove the cable at the other end so you can remove carb to work on it

SOURCE: 1983 Honda CB550 Electrical Issue

sounds like a poor ground issue, pull out the headlight and check all connections in there, your turn signals are on seperate feeds than the lights but they will probably share the same ground/earth in the headlight

Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

Loud grinding noise from under passanger seat.. comes and goes... hit a bump and it stops. hit another it starts. greased the u joints and quit for 3 days.. but back again. getting more freaqueant and...

If greasing the u-joints eliminated the noise for 3 days, that would be the first place to suspect. The grease will briefly remove most of the slack in the joint until it is slung out and the needle bearings will once again run dry & wobble. This noise can be anything from a grind to a loud squeal. I hope this helps.

Hi, may I know crankshaft pulley having a bush intact?mine was 98' accord sv4, it was a noise appear when air cond. compressor engaged, i thought it was compressor noise, but aircond mechanic told me it...

you do not mention the type of noise rattle , squeal , rumble , grinding so any answer is a guess
the only noise from a crankshaft pulley would be a squeal/scream from a failed harmonic balance rubber insert
when the ac compressor is engaged the extra load on the pulley would make it slip on the rubber
however as the ac compressor would not be driving long before the crank pulley came apart I suspect that the mechanic was not experienced enough to advise correctly
suggest that you get a second opinion from an accredited professional ac specialist

Loud squealing noise from Drum belt looks fine other solutions

If the noise is like a shaking of rattling , like coins being shaked , then it is an object trapped inside the drum.

If instead the noise is a loud grinding , that may get louder on high speed, then it is usually a bad drum bearing.

If dryer is not cooling, check that the noise is not coming from the ventilation fan.

Rollers and belt tensioner can also make noise.
