The tank next to the gas tank under the seat is for two stroke oil, any high quality or brand name motor cycle two stroke oil eg. Castrol 2T (Jaso FB) classification.
Gear oil is SAE 85W/90 (API classification) capacity of 100ml.

was the 2.8 liter for the crank case or total system capacity, one thing you want to absoulutley avoid is over filling the crank, one thing to check is to see if oil is making its way into the crank via the oil tube, also is it a 2 or 4 stroke, 2 strokes require a oil mix for the gas not the crank and a specific ratio, unmixed gas in a 2 stroke = siezed motor,
ts 185 is a two stroke, the crank case oil is actually only the gearbox oil, the volumne is caste onto the side cover(like 750cc).near the filler cap. The engine oil is mixed with the fuel and is pumped in from the oil tank under the seat. The wrong oil or no oil in the tank under the seat can cause it to lose compression. and cause engine damage. Visit a bike shop and get motorcycle gear oil20w50 for gearbox. and two stroke motorcycle engine oil for the oil tank. As it is quite old someone may have removed the oil tank, thinking they will make it go faster or save weight or another stupid reason, if this is so you need to mix the two stroke oil with the petrol when you fill the tank at approx 25-1 ( 25 litres petrol mixed with 1 litre of oil)
Smoke in a two stroke motor is caused by two things. 1) Even a four stroke will smoke if it has too rich of a mixture or a carburetor that has a malfunctioning choke (a new choke plunger would fix this). Make sure you have a good o-ring on the main jet holder. This was a common problem on old Yamaha two stroke carburetors.2) The type of oil you are using is of a very low grade. Smokeless oils and synthetic oils will smoke less and could solve the problem. You could just be seeing old residue burning out of the exhaust system, try cleaning the baffle. When you rebuilt the motor did you use a semi drying liquid type gasket material between the two case halves? This would keep transmission oil from leaking into the crankcase. If you have only started the motor in the driveway you may have to just go out for a long drive down the road to clean up all the systems.
It's a two stroke, it has a separate spot to put the two cycle oil under the seat. It injects the oil itself, so you just make sure its always has two cycle oil in there and fill the gas tank with straight gas.
2 stroke oil feels alot different than brake fluid and is usually blue or green ,where brake fluid is supposed to be clear but might be root beer brown in a 1991 bike. Stick your finger in and you'll find the one for oil....Good luck to you friend....Tim
You are confusing yourself. Gearbox oil does go in via the dipstick. Engine oil goes in under the seat. The engine oil they are speaking of is called " TWO STROKE ENGINE OIL ". It is designed to mix with the fuel by being pumped into the carb intake system along with the fuel. Any motorcycle shop, auto shop, lawn equipment shop, gas station and many grocery stores and convience stores will have this oil.
