I have in the yard for repair as well but this one has a problem with the ignition switch whereby you turn ignition on and it all lights up but when you try to start their is no spark and the oil light goes out which i think is a problem with the electrical contact switch ,but on many of these little machines that i look at for people is the fuel .now if you remove the big box under the seat so you can see the engine ,now look carefully for a thin rubber pipe from the inlet manifold to a special valve on the bottom of the fuel tank ,This valve is vacumn operated and if tis defective or the pipe has perished then it will not allow fuel into the carb so have a good look and if the pipe is ok then pour some petrol into air filter and if it fires and splutters a bit then you will need to change this valve ,they do break down and normally when bike is around 4/5 yrs old its fairly common and the new valve is around 45 euros including the tax

  1. Try putting your hand over the air filter opening and see if it starts. If it does, you have a problem with your choke.
  2. Make sure your kill switch is not in the off position. Also check your kickstand safety switch for proper operation.
  3. Check the solenoid.
  4. If the Vespa was dropped or laid on it's side gas or oil may have gotten into the wrong places. Try taking your gas cap off, changing out the spark plug and/or changing the oil and filter to see if that helps.
  5. If the Vespa hasn't been run in a few months and the gas was untreated, you may have a clogged carburetor.
  6. If you have the electric starter on your Vespa and it is not turning over, you may have a bad starter motor or ignition switch.

I would suspect a dead battery or a loose connection. If you have a digital muli-meter, we can test further, I do recommend you check the main inline fuse first. If this its OK, clean the entire fuel system, carb fuel tank and flush lines. Also, replace any fuel filters you might find.

Hope helps.

The poor performance of the engine can makes these faults to come up. we need to check from the fuel tank , check if the fuel contains impurities and specially water. If so this can come up when the tank gets empty and produce misfiring, splutter and jerks. So a check on the fuel filter will confirm this as it will be seen, if so remove and clean tank and change the filter. We then come to the carburetor as the fuel mixing is determined in this section. You need to have the carburetor removed and all ports washed and cleaned if there is traces of dirt or clogging noticed in the fuel chamber.

Secondly we need to check on the electrics. The spark intensity is most important .Remove the plug to check gap and condition of plugs. The black plug indication will confirm that the performance is bad whereas a fully fired plug without deposits must be the ideal view. Check the HT coil and the HT wires, if the intensity is bad the ignition system must be checked. DO NOT CHANGE any part without a confirmation--- trying with a replacement from another vehicle. Finally the LT trigger to the coils must be checked be it from the platinum points or an electronic ignition unit. The voltage of the trigger must be high to give the best HT output.

Finally check the Timing on the engine. Also check compression of engine since you experience starting fault.

Thank you for using Fixya

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

If there's spark then the problem can just be on the spark plugs. It may have big gaps, corroded or just faulty that's why she won't fire up. This is one thing to consider. Hope to get that scooter working.
Hope this helps and thank you for using Fixya! Have a good one!

There are many reasons that lead to no start. weak/dead battery, no fuel, blocking intake or exhaust, loose spark plug wire. You could check these parts and find the corresponding solutions. If you have interest in vespa sprint, feel free to chat with me.

- I think you splashed water into the fan shroud on the right side of the engine (see picture)
- this causes a malfunction in the ignition and needs to be serviced at a Vespa dealer
