Hello,
My name is mike.
Some of the gold wings have what they call is a safety switch associated with the kick stand. Now, what this means, is a lot of times they will allow you to start the bike, but if the switch has a short or not working at all, as soon as you try and put it into gear, it shuts off. To explain further is, this safety switch that is hooked into your kick stand is for safety, so that you do not acedently drive off with kick stand down and of course can cause a wreck. Even though you might have kick stand up, if switch is not working, as soon as you put it into gear it shuts down bike. Now, by you putting it on stand and only cranks but does not start can still be related to same issue. So, I would look in your manual to find this, but here is a place for you to call to get exact area this would be if your bike has one, and I assume it does, because I myself have same bike, but mine is a 1993. I just sold it, and wish I had it back, was great bike, Here is the phone number to a honda place I use that is 100% good service and will treat you right for questions relating to this.
Open 10 am to 6pm (pacific time) Beaverton Honda Phone number to service (503) 718-6620
They are open Tue through Fridays, 9am to 5pm in service..... Hope this helps , Mike
Hello,
Ok lets get to the bottom of this. Assuming you checked those safety switches and our convinced that they are working correctly I am having a little problem with this as if it would start and idle while sitting there until you put it into gear ok, I have some possible things to check out based on that symptom. Now, where I scratch my head is, is should do the same thing when putting it on back stands and not just crank and crank and not start. So lets break this down some:
First of all, if your bike is starting ok and it idles until you put it into gear and dies, then with out giving you a bunch of mechanical mumble jumble talk, I will explain it simple. Bikes and Cars, when idling rpms are automatically higher, until you put them into gear, then rpms lower, until you start driving away. Now, this you I assume already know. However if a car or bike has poor gas or old, partially clogged fuel filters or dirty, or injectors or carb are dirty, this can for sure cause this symptom. Hold that thought for a minute:
Now, in your case it is starting and then dies, when you put it into gear, ok fine. But when you put it on back stands, it just cranks and won't start. These issues are separate and can only in most cases be related in again, a safety switch issue. I will explain. If you have bike not on back stands, and it starts and idles but dies when in gear assuming the safety switch is working good, the things that should be checked or replace or cleaned are as follows to solve this normal problem based on your description of the symptoms.
Replacing the fuel filter
Making sure fresh fuel
Cleaning of injectors by manual (hose kit ) or injector cleaner added to fuel, not as effective but can help over time.
Now, My opinion is when you start the bike and then it dies when putting it in gear makes sense if kick stand switch for safety is operating proper, But when putting it on stands, and it does not start, in my mind still comes back to the safety switch (might even be in and connected via the back kick stand) But sense cost are low to replace or clean the things I just suggested would be a good start. But I still am a little bothered myself that it should be starting and dieing weather it is on back stands or not. Keep me informed. MIke
Here is another area I researched that you might check into that could also solve this problem. I have been making calls and doing heavy research to help you and here is another area that could cause this to check out.
Pull in on the clutch lever. You should hear two clicks. The first click is the switch that disengages the cruise control. The second click is the micro switch that allows the starter to operate. If you don't here the second click, the shift lever is not making contact with switch. Try adjusting the switch position. If you are handy with tools try filing the screw hole on the switch so as to move it closer to the clutch lever. Or you can build up the contact pad on the clutch lever with a little tape or something so as to contact the switch. You could try double sided gray tape, as it had better adhesive qualities, to build up the pad surface. Let me know please. Mike
Hello again,
Like I said I am making some calls to my resources as well. The main people I talk to for some help as well our closed today, I am hoping I get those final answers from them tomorrow; But so far with my research, experience and the contacts I have made still point back to two areas. The side stand kill switch, even though I was told is showing correct amps, they told me, could still be bad switch. Other place I contacted said, like i said also earlier of a possible area, is in the switch of the clutch. Now, I am not giving up, I am just hands tide at then moment until tomorrow to confirm some things, once I talk to my main man I consult with as second opinion or other ideas. That is where I am so far, but not giving up. Mike

i check the kick stand switch and it is working correctly. Do you have any more suggestions
i have already checked the switch that you are talking about they both are working correctly, I checked them using an ohm meter. By the way, when I was talking about putting it on the rear stand, I was just testing if I could start it in gear. It will start on the rear stand when in neutral. I do not think it is a fuel issue. It runs fine at idle and at high RPM"s. Ihave been talking with another person that I know and he thinks that the side stand swich might be fine but could be in wiring. I would like to know if the switch is operating a relay or what it controls to shut the bike off when it is lowered while in gear
