hey m8,, does the petrol pump work,, and fuel in the carbs,
make sure u have fuel gettin to the carbs,,pull off the fuel line on the carb, and a quick on and off of the ignition, see if fuel pours out the fuel line 1st,,if thats all cool,, then check u havent got a air leak ,in the air box,, check the jubilee clips on the carbs holdin the air box on are sealing and tight,, ,if thats cool, check and clean your plugs,, take a plug out and put in its cap again ,lay on top the motor and turn the engine over, check if its sparkin nice,, if all that is good ,, this happens a lot if been mest with,, but have u had the coil leads off b4,, if so u may have the wires on the wrong coils,, as u r sat on the bike, from left to right should be 1,3,4,2,,left coil 4 plugs 1 and 4,, right coil 4 2, and 3,,

SOURCE: Vstar 650 classic. only will idle.

hello and welcome
this is a very very commom problem after the cycle has gone over a storage period of anything over a month or so. what has happened is the deteriorated fuel has plugged the idle jet, and possibley other jetting. this is verified by pulling out the choke allows it to run. because this makes of for the loss of fuel the jets are not produceing. so to fix this you will need to remove the carbs and take out the jets and clean them thoroughly with a carb cleaner and possibly a very small gauge wire to break up builup. especially in the pilot jet. unfortunately fuel added carb cleaners dont seem to work for this kind of problem and to fix right they should be disassembled and cleaned thoroughly. thank you.

G'day egdbcs . Ok.now lets see.You say good spark,so i'm presuming you are doing the old sight test.Try bending the arm on a know good sparkplug about 5-6mm,earth the plug and kick'er in the guts(crank it over)Be very carefull , high voltage danger. If there's still a good spark it's safe to say that there will also be a good spark under pressure in the combustion chamber, speaking of which you should also do a compression test, anything over 100psi should be ok. as i'm not to sure of the extent of the re-build,hopefully the valves were lapped and checked for straight and true and valve seals replaced,if you notice oil on the tip of the spark plug you could have a leaking valve seal or oil seal .Try putting a small amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber ,tighten up the spark plug ,install the plug cap and.......Yeah ..You guessed it ..."kicker in the guts".If all the abouve are correct and true it should fire up.If it runs for 5-10 seconds then stops you've got some sort of fuel starvation problem , could be dirt in the carb, blocked idle jet ,or air passage or even the needle could have come off it's clip, believe me with an old bike like yours anything could be worn and loose inside that carby. The only other thing to consider is the timing. There may be a good spark but is it happening at the right time inside the engine???. I'll leave it all in your capable hands EGDBCS.Hope this helps to solving your worries. Chow for now......Tilleydog..

SOURCE: 2007 yamaha virago won't start - replaced spark

it's not that your not gettin gas it's that the gas is not getting thru the carbs to the engine. your bike will probably start w/choke on and then die, your jets are clogged and happens to most bikes that are stored w/gas in the carbs.,,,clean them if you know how or take it to a trusted mech...good luck to you...Tim

2010 crossfire 800 had a small back fire stalled wouldnt start for 30 min ran for 5 miles next day ran 3 miles than small back fire stalled started 20min later run for 5 miles took home wont start

Sounds like it was starving for fuel. First thing to do is check your fuel pump pressure with a gauge. Try sprayinf a little starting fluid into the throttle body to see if it will start. If it does, then you know its a fuel problem.

2002 Jeep Liberty ran car last night then went next day no start and the fuel gauge doesn't move so I put gas in it but still doesn't move nor start

Spray starting fluid into the engine air intake, if it fires up and dies you have a defective fuel pump most likely.

Need suggested fixes

clean your carb out, not getting enough gas I guarantee you didn't run wire thru your jets best thing to do is take the carb to your nearest lawnmower repair shop to have them soak it in cleaning solution for a day or to and have them put a carbkit in it

2000 pontiac grand am - not starting. fuel pump does sound like its runing when you first turn the key. If you spray starting fluid into the intake it will start but will not keep running.

If it fires on starting fluid, its not getting fuel. If you have acess to the tools test the fuel pressure. If not start with the filter, its cheap and if the pump sounds like its running this would be the next major cause. If that dont fix it, its probably the pump. Had a sunfire around the same year that would actually run for ten minutes or so before it died. Never checked the fuel pump because the car would run so I assumed it was working, I mean you could hear it kick on. But after changing every thing else the car ended up needing a fuel pump. Hope this helps

98 taurus started ran a bit then died now wont start

If that is your only transportation you need to call other repair shops. Find out about towing fees and what diagnostic fees they have.

Before there were diagnostic scanners, there were Mechanics. Scanners come in all types and some will suggest possible solutions and others are tools which Mechanics use to find problems.

For instance, you are told you have fuel pressure. You are told they installed new spark-plugs. You were not told if the spark-plugs are getting electricity to fire. You were not told if the fuel injectors are getting electricity to allow gas to reach the cylinders. You can have fuel pressure but the fuel injectors must open to put gas into the engine.

A noid tester or plain testing light will show if the injectors are opening. A spray of starting fluid will also indicate if the engine is not getting fuel despite fuel pressure. It will try to run with starting fluid if it has spark.

When you find out whether it runs, if not, then check for spark if the starting fluid does not make a difference.

It is questionable whether new spark plugs were needed if installing them had no effect. Check other service places.
