2000 Yamaha XJ 900 S Diversion will not start

My son stopped to fuel up and his Yamaha 900 diversion would not re-start, engine turned over but would not fire up. Luckily he has breakdown cover and the chap who came out told him there was no spark and that the coils were to blame. Is this likely, I believe there are two coils, would both fail at the same time, the bike had been running well before he stopped for fuel, any ideas would be great as I am 200 miles away from him.

I have just been told by my son that the breakdown mechanic informed him that two plugs were sparking and 1 each side was not , I assume that the breakdown chap meant that 1 plug on each coil was not getting a spark, any ideas

You need fresh gasoline in it, if it's been idle for two(2) years, you also have to clean everything that your gasoline touches like the tank, fuel filter, fuel line, carburator, before pouring it in. If that wont help you, Have your CDI tested if your plugs wont spark. Also ask for the history of your bike, if it was running before they stopped using it.

the floats in the carb are stuck. you can try lightly tapping on the carb with a screwdriver that should do the trick.

Without the year of the bike I am hampered. Lets assume it is an older bike and has a set of ignition points and not a CDI model.
.
Pull the cover off the shifter side of the engine. Remove the spark plug then turn the flywheel so you can see the points. Oil on them? Dirt, or rust? Next check the main bearing. Do not rotate the flywheel but instead hold the flywheel firmly and lift it up and down, left and right. Was there any movement or was the flywheel rock solid?
.
I am willing to bet that the points were dirty and there was a lot of play in the crank bearings. If so, you will need new crank bearings and seals plus new points and condenser. The engine needs to tear down into about 75 parts in order to replace the bearings. The job requires some special tools to remove the flywheel and clutch, plus a crankcase separator the split the gearbox.
.
This is not a job for the beginner. I suggest you have the shop do the work and also that you spring for 3 more bearings and seals plus a fresh cylinder bore, new piston and rings and a new spark plug. You now have a brand new engine that should run well and last for many years. Please rate this solution. Thanks

A yellow spark is a weak spark. A blueish white spark is normal. It sounds like the CDI is not in good shape. A dealer can quickly check the system and tell you what the bike needs.

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

SOURCE: 2000 Yamaha XJ 900 Diversion. I've got an engine

Have you had it serviced lately?? Is the oil the correct viscosity?? Have you changed the oil filter recently?? Mine went slightly noisey when I replaced the oil and filter, The oil I used was too thick, I`ve got 10W 40 in now, It`s run great since I changed it in April. Touch wood. Ian
