Low oil pressure at low rpms

When engine idles or runs at low rpms my oil pressure drops below redline. There is also a clicking noise on the passenger side of the pickup. Could this be an oil pump issue and if so how do you change an oil pump?

My oil pressure needle would move a little before this but never this much. I've had a bad main seal on the front of the engine and have had a slow oil leak for 6 months now. I've been making sure the oil level stays where it needs to until I can overhaul the engine. Now my oil pressure drops below redline and the red engine light comes on until I pick up the rpms again. This just started about a week ago. Is it the oil pump or something else?

Depending on tone and depth of "clicking" it could be anything from lifters to connecting rods or piston pins....

cheapest to expensive:

Replace oil filter

if that doesn't do it (which it doesn't sound like it),

Replace engine...

Because clicking/ticking/clunking noises while having a "low oil pressure" issue (most of the time) means the engine is destroying itself.

SOURCE: Low oil pressure on 2001 Suburban

your oil sensor comes on at less than ten psi, you may have internal engine damage how many miles on engine, any gum up inside engine, you can try to put on a high pressure high volume melling oil pump to try to help for the time being, but you may need to have it torn and repaired.

SOURCE: oil pressure low when idling. When running engine

That is normal, my truck , if it had a light , it would be on, the gauge goes to about 0 when idling and flies right back up when going, When it stops moving is when I'll get worried about it. You might try heavier oil this summer and see if that changes anything. Go with a 10w40. If you are already using this, try straight 40 one time. Hope this helps.

Thicker oil is all you need. 5w30 is too thin when it warms up and the sensor cant pick up the flow going past. 10w40 should stop all the issues

00 lincon navigator 5.4 oil pressure drop's low and light comes on , engine idles rough when pressure drops ,then pressure return s to normal range ,light goes out ,engine runs perfect. Is it my oil

Sounds more like an engine idle issue than a oil pressure issue. If the engine idle drops too low, the oil pump cannot provide sufficient oil pressure. If there is no oil light when the engine is idling normally, then there is no problem there.

What year is it? Your symtoms suggest oil contamination from bad fuel pressure regulator.

Is this high mileage vehicle? If so, I doubt changing oil pump will help, you may need engine overhaul?
Sometimes, you use an analog pressure gage in place of the oil pressure sending unit, to read actual oil pressure. My info says at idle, oil pressure 4.3 psi or more. At 3000 rpms, it says 43--78 psi.

1996 Ford 300 six cylinder loses oil pressure when engine warms up

first you will have to say what the oil pressure is cold, idle and 2000 rpms and then hot idle and 2000 rpms before a decision to advise about a rebuild can be made
there are many reasons oil pressure can drop and not all require a rebuild

I have a 2001 suzuki vitara the oil light comes on at low idle

means your oil pressure is dropping below an acceptable standard. the oil pump is operated by the crank shaft so when the RPMs drop, so does the output of the pump. the engine is 10 years old and like everything else it, and its components, wears out with age and use.

you can try replacing the oil pressure sensor, but most likely the problem is an old pump. an alternative would be to jack up the idle a bit so the pump runs a bit faster at idle.

2001 GMC safari engine noise- sounds low, like spun rod bearing. BUT.... seems actually QUIETER under a load. NOISIER at idle. Oil pressure is low at idle. I was trying to do a "relearn...

not a bearing problem as they get noisier under load or rpms , not quieter
oil pressure always drops around 10% of full pressure at idle more if the oil is of low viscosity ( 5w10 or 15) use a mechanic stethoscope to determine noise source at idle

Low pressure when at idle, after the engine has warmed up and the oil has thinned, indicates that the oil pump is worn and needs to be replaced.
