What is the best ignition coil to run on my '83 HD FLHT?? I'd like to replace my old one with an after market high performance ignition coil. Any suggestions??

Everyone has their favorite spark plugs and oil. As for spark plugs, I like NGK plugs because I've had less problems with them than any other plug I've ever run.

As for oil, it depends on whether you're talking petroleum based or synthetic. Aftermarket petroleum based, I like RevTech. Aftermarket synthetic Mobil V-Twin.

Under the seat is an electronic control module. This controls all ignitions.

How to Tell if You Have a Faulty Coil Pac How a Coil Pack Works When creating a spark at the spark plug, the fire must initiate from a high voltage supply, so as much fuel as possible burns in the cylinder. Whenever the combustion process is started, the coil pack builds up the energy, as much as 50,000 to 75,000 Volts. When the electronic control module (the car computer) sends the signal to the ignition control, the voltage is released from the coil pack through the spark plug cables to the spark plug.
When the spark travels to the spark plug, it jumps from the spark plug gap to the ground, causing an explosion of the fuel air mixture inside the cylinder chamber Coil Pack Problems Usually, if a coil pack is bad, there will be a loss of fire or spark in one or more cylinders. You need to use ohm meter to test the coil pack for continuity. Make sure you have the approximate ohm values for the coil pack. To find this information, research your car's engine on the Internet or purchase a Chilton's or Haynes manual to find out what the mega ohms reading on the coil pack should be. What Coil Pack Works with a Rotary Engine? Most rotary engines require a different type of ignition coil pack. Below are two, one for a standard replacement, and one that is a higher voltage performance type coil pack.

1998 FLHT wont fire up

Are there any codes. Does it backfire?

To start you need spark at the plugs, fuel in the induction module or tubes and compression in the combustion chamber. Have you checked any or all of these???

As a starting point install NEW plugs and also:

Ignition Coil Primary Circuit Test
Remove the coil. THEN set your ohmmeter scale to RX1 and place ohmmeter leads on the primary coil windings A (front of coil) to B (middle of coil), B to C (front of coil) and check for primary coil winding resistance which normal resistance range is 0.5-0.7 ohms. If primary resistance is not within this range check out test results below.

Ignition Coil Secondary Circuit Test
With the ignition coil removed from the motorcycle and the ohmmeter set to the RX1K scale place the ohmmeter leads on the secondary coil windings B (middle terminal) to
R (rear secondary terminal/socket), B to F (front secondary terminal/socket) and check for secondary coil winding resistance which normal resistance range will be 5.5-7.5K ohms. If secondary resistance is not within this range check out test results below.

Test Results
A low resistance value indicates a short in the coil winding which requires coil replacement.

A high resistance value might indicate that there is some corrosion/oxidation of the coil terminals requiring the coil terminals to be cleaned and the resistance test then repeated and if after the test is repeated the resistance is still high after the terminals were cleaned the coil must be replaced.
If there is an infinite ohms or no continuity) resistance value the coil is open and must be replaced.

When it rains, car sputters and check eng. light comes on. replace 2 of coil packs and plugs but still having same issue.

Frequently high humidity or rainy weather can cause poor performance, usually because of a problem in the ignition system. Moisture and condensation may be forming iaround or in the coil packs. Also, the ignition (suppression) wires may be old and arcing from one cable to another, causing timing issues and misfire problems. That problem is aggravated by moisture and humidity. Look for old or loose plug wires loose plugs, etc.Look for ways to dsplace water in these ares. Sometimes there isn't anything to be done and it will cure itself after warmup.

Does the vehicle have coil on plug ignition or coilpack ? And it's not primary or secondary coil malfunctioning It's primary or secondary circuit . I'm assuming it has a coil pack because you say plug wires.
P0350 - Ignition Coil (Undetermined) Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction Each ignition primary circuit is continuously monitored. The test fails when the PCM does not receive a valid IDM pulse signal from the ignition module (integrated in the PCM).
  • Open or short in the Ignition START/RUN circuit.
  • Open coil driver circuit.
  • Coil driver circuit shorted to ground.
  • Damaged coil.
  • Damaged PCM.
  • Coil driver circuit shorted to VPWR.
P0351 - Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction See the description for DTC P0350. See the possible causes for DTC P0350.
Pull the spark plugs out an look at them , check the gap ,if too wide replace them . If the spark plug gap gets too worn ,the spark won't jump the gap. It will find the least resistance path to ground ,and it will do it inside the coil . Going from the secondary circuit back to the primary coil an to ground through the PCM - engine computer . The PCM has transistors inside that open an close the primary side to ground ,this builds up a magnetic field around the secondary inducing high voltage spark . Well this can short out the transistor inside the PCM . Most of the time that's what these type codes mean . The PCM would need to be replaced an programmed . This can also damage the catalytic converter. Your best bet , take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop.

I need a engine diagram to replace camshaft sensor

there is actually no camshaft sensor,,,it will set a code P0341 camshaft performance code but there is NO cam sensor,,,,it means secondary ignition is the fault,,,,,like old and worn spark plugs and wires,coil packs corroded,ignition module high resistance,coolant temp sensor bad,crank sensor going bad,those are all the possible reasons for that code,if the plugs and wires are old replace them FIRST also when you remove the wires from the coils make sure there is NO corrosion on the towers,if there is you need a new coil pack,,,,DO NOT use platinum spark plugs,this will cause this code to set,these cars are VERY sensitive to this,,,use regualr plugs like ac delco or ngk but no platinum,,,,,clear code and see if resets
