Gas tank decal

Try using a hair dryer to heat the sticker (Be sure gas cap is secure). Once warmed up peel the sticker off. Can also try spraying WD-40 or commercial goo remover on sticker, allowing it to soak, then removing the sticker.

there is no drain, just the gas valve to the carbs, remove that valve to drain the tank, do not get any gas on the paint or engine, it will damage the paint very quickly, I strongly suggest u remove the tank or syphon the gas out of it

For stick on decals try using hot soapy water and a lot of care .don't pull too hard as you may take of paint with the decal once you have poured the hot soapy water over the decal ,try and get the edge of the decal to come away from the tank .start with your thumb nail Never use any abrasive tool like a knife or screwdriver as this will scratch the paintwork.and once you have a finger grip pour hot water on the decal directly where its attached to the tank .The hot water softens the glue on the decal .pull very gently .it does help tp have another person pouring the water on the decal ,this will leave your hands free to remove the decal.Once decal has been removed ,try using a small amount of petrol on a rag or a good colour restorer polish .to remove the glue left on the tank .Depending how long the decal has been on the tank ,you may well find that the sun has bleached the tank from it original colour .and the paint under the decal will be much fresher looking and of a deeper colour.

Go to a auto paint supply store and buy the emblem remover spray costs about ten bucks and will scrape off with plastic squeegee you can buy one four a buck at the same place and if you don't know of any paint stores look in the yellow pages of the phone book under paint and look for auto paint retail store. You can also use a hair dryer and a single edge razor blade heat the emblem up with the hair dryer and carefully get blade under the emblem then pull on the tip and keep a steady slow pull on the emblem and use the blade to help lift it up. Then you can clean the glue off with gasoline or super Clean. Be sure you have the gas cap on and a wet rag around the tank lid to prevent a spark from hair dryer igniting the gas. There is a spray product that I used a long time ago to remove the vinyl letters off a boat. It worked great just can't remember the name. Check with an auto paint supplyer.

Try a hair dryer or a heat gun. Works really well. The glue that is left behind after the decals are removed can be removed with mineral spirits.

It sounds as if you are willing to do the right thing and get it coated or painted, right? What you need is not necessarily a clearcoat, but a better paint. Unless you use urethane paint, like they use on today's bikes, gas will dull or melt your tank paint. I'm not saying you can soak the think in gas, but you can spill fuel all over it, and just wipe it off without damage. Needs to be the top quality, urethane based auto paint. Costs more than the old DuPont Imron, but it's well worth it, looks great, and is gas-proof with or without the accompanying clear layer. I have restored many old bikes, and finally found out the hard way, not to scrimp on the tank paint! Good Luck. TT

If the emblems are decals, you can heat them with a hair dryer and peel them off with a credit card. If they're metal, I would think it's easier to take off the metal emblems and have the original tank repainted, or at least touched up.

the 3M protective film works really well, I have it on the nose of my GTI. It will add some sheen, but I highly reccomend it
