Tires I want to replace the tyres on my bike. I saw a documentary on TV for bicycles, a service man on Belgium said that for bicycles it is better if the tyres are left in the basement for couple of years, I wonder does this apply to all the tyres or not? currently I have Bridgestone, what do you recon, which ones should I buy?

Kent are cheap bikes usually sold in large department stores. There isn't anything special about them and any local bike shop will be able to service them for you. They use all the common size tires/tubes, pedals, bearings etc. and replacement parts are relatively cheap from your local specialty bike shop retailer or can be found online at Amazon or Ebay.

I have listed the most famous bike types: BMX Bicycle

Bicycle Moto Cross (BMX) bicycles are designed for rough off road riding and are typically single speed. People also use them for stunt riding, and you may see some fitted with stunt pegs.

Mountain Bike (MTB)

A mountain bike is designed for trail riding and downhill riding. It can also be ridden on the road. They come in many shapes and forms. Some have no suspension, whilst others have front and rear suspension. A mountain bike without rear suspension is usually called a hard tail bike.

Most MTBs use 26 inch wheels which is the standard. This size wheel is fairly strong, especially when coupled with the large off road tyres that are fitted to MTBs.

An MTB is suited for off road riding and will handle rough terrain quite easy. It is very stable on rough terrain, but is a lot slower to ride on the road when compared to a road bike. It is also suitably geared for climbing hills.

Hybrid Bicycle

Another style of bike that has a similar riding position to a mountain bike, but better road speed is a Hybrid bicycle. Hybrids are a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. They have an upright comfortable position, road tyres, and are usually a lot lighter than a mountain bike.

Hybrid bicycles are typically used for commuting.

Touring Bicycle

A touring bicycle is designed for loaded cycle touring and has the capability to be fitted with mudguards, racks, panniers and extra water cages. They are typically fitted with wider road type tyres that are suitable for gravel riding also.

They usually come with a stronger frame and longer chainstays so that the back of your feet don't hit the rear panniers. They are usually fitted with a relaxed drop bar style handlebar. The geometry of the frame is also different and allows for much more easier steering and handling when loaded.

Expedition Bicycle

As above for touring, but usually fitted with Trekking bars and MTB gear and is designed for extreme off road conditions.

Randonneur or 'All Rounder'

A rare beast in Australia where we like to specialise. 'Randonneur' is a French term, coined to describe a bike that can do a bit of everything - you can ride with the pack or take a doddle with the kids, you can ride light or carry a load, you'd use it to visit Gran on Sunday then pick up some groceries on the way home. They are the 'family station wagon' of cycling. However, like any Jack of All Trades, they do everything well but the specialists do it better. They can carry a load but not like a heavy tourer. They are fast but heavier than a racer and with more comfortable geometry. They have wider wheels and tyres to ride on rough roads but wont handle true off road work.

Typically, they look like any other racing or flat bar road bike ... until you look at the details. Most randonneurs start life as a touring bike or hybrid, and are then modified by the owner over time to reflect how they are used.

The below are improvements over the years. One thing to remember that a HUGE % of the energy the rider puts into moving forward is used to overcome wind resistance.

In terms of motion....

Lighter overall. Lighter bikes overall, lighter wheels - easier to spin up and keep rolling.

More efficent bearings all around/ wheels cranks, etc.

Better design of frames/bars, etc. Positions the rider better on the bike to convert his energy into forward motion Also - better positions the rider on the bike to cut the wind better - lower rider resistance.

better tires, skinner tires - Less rolling restiance -

The Bugaboo pump is a plastic joke and a bad one at that. Most Bugaboo's have the same tyre valve as a car and a car foot pump from your auto shop or department store will be cheaper and faster. If you want a more portable pump check out your local bike shop they have far better ones available. Very old Bugaboos have the smaller bicycle valve the newest Bugaboo's now have foam filled tires. Once you've pumped it up check for leaks, just unclip the wheel and stick it in a tub of water. If you have bubbles you need to fix the tube,

Basically check the condition of the tires, if they look dry and cracked it is better to replace them, The gray tube that is sticking out is the inner tube which holds the air for the tire. If that looks good just fill it up with air to the recommended air pressure on the side of the tire and put some light oil on the chain and the bike will be road ready. If after a few days your tires lose air again, it would be better to replace the inner tubes.

More than likely there's a leak, maybe small but enough to cause a flat.

As for tubes your local bike shop may carry the 12" or the 16" depending on the stroller make and model. Check the side of the tire to see if you can identify the size, if not the stroller manufacturer or the site should give you more information.

The tires with these jogging strollers come off fairly easily with any regular bicycle tire levers. Although it's possible to take them off by hand, if it's difficult any bicycle shop would carry standard bicycle tire levers. I personally recommend the life time warranty tire levers by Pedro. They are very strong and designed to take off some of the beefiest mountain bike tires.

It would also be good to have spare tubes. You can find bulk tire tubes on eBay for cheap!

Take one of the wheels to your local bicycle repair shop and they can match the tire for you. If you take both they will change the tires for you and check the tubes all for a nominal fee.

Thank you for answering. I have solved my probelm. I bought a new wheel complete, just refit my tyre and dropped it in. My bike is alot better now.
