Question about 2002 BMW R 1150 GS

Oil If oil is getting to hot when you standing still about 45 minutes is this a problem or is it normal ?

Since the R1150 engine is entirely air cooled, standing still with the engine running for extended periods will quickly lead to high temperatures. This is normal and engine temperatures should be monitored to prevent excessive engine temp. This can lead to valve stem jamming in the valve guide, warping of heads, etc. I can see my engine temps increasing if I drive slowly (1st gear) in loose sand (high engine revs). You just have to monitor it. I haven't heard of anybody overheating an R1150 engine yet, but I suppose there is always a first time. Having an engine problem in the bush (here is South Africa we do a lot of off-road driving far away from civilization) is not a good idea.

It is normal for the top radiator hose to be hotter than the lower hose. The top hose brings the heated coolant from the engine to the radiator, and the lower hose returns the cooler water from the radiator back to the engine to help keep the engine at proper temperature. For the smell, check to see if you have any oil leaks, especially where the oil may run/drip on to the exhaust manifold. Check the valve cover gaskets, and look for excessively oily areas on the bottom of the car to see if you can find where the oil is leaking from.

Exterior of oven , top and both sides gets very hot to touch, when cooking +- 10 minutes or more the last couple of days; no Error ( E41/42/45 or 47 are being displayed. Fan is normal, functions: OK
There could be food or oil buildup around the door frame which will absorb some of the radiant and microwave energy whilst cooking. Give it all a good clean and see if that helps. If everything else is working properly, it may be a problem with the cooling fan. Microwave ovens have a "stirrer fan" inside the roof or rear of the cooking area to disperse the microwaves and some convection / microwave ovens also have a cooling fan which assists in dissipating heat within the cabinet.

How can I change the car oil
Basic procedure for almost all vehicles:
Warm engine to operating temperature. (Hot oil drains more quickly and more completely) Raise vehicle enough to crawl under it on your back (secure with wood blocks or jack stand so it doesn't slip off jack) set parking brake to avoid roll. Get a suitable container for used oil, (at least 5QT capacity) Locate oil pan, will have a plug with a bolt head on it on bottom corner of pan. (usually middle bottom of the engine in location) Loosen and remove oil plug being careful not to get hot oil on your hand. (gloves recommended) Locate oil filter on either underside or toward the side of engine. Remove oil filter with oil filter wrench. (they are usually on too tight to remove by hand) Allow to drain thoroughly for about 10 minutes. Coat new oil filter gasket with fresh motor oil. Screw oil filter on until contact with housing , then an additional 1/4 turn. Replace oil plug. Tighten to 45 ft lbs, or pretty tight, do not over tighten. Lower vehicle. (On level ground) Fill engine with correct weight oil (probably 10W-30W for yours) 4 QTS. Remove oil check dipstick and wipe. Start motor, allow to run for 30 seconds to fill up oil filter and circulate well. Shut off engine, wait 1 minute for oil to drain back into the oil pan, then check oil level with dipstick. Add more as needed to reach full mark on dipstick. (4.5 QTS for V6, 5 QTS for V8 usually) DO NOT OVERFILL! Start motor, check for leaks under vehicle. If ok, you are done. I use the 5QT containers of oil (cheaper too) and then put used oil back into empty container and take to a recycling station for disposal.

How to check oil
Hi Anonymous, always check engine oil hot, let idle for 2 minutes on jiffy stand, turn off engine and stand motorcycle upright, pull out dip stick and check for oil level at upper most top line. Add oil if necessary, drain if over full. Good luck

Hi Vander, the Harley Bible says, engine should be at normal operating tempurature, let idle on jiffy stand for two minutes. Shut off engine and hold bike straight up, correct engine oil level will be at the top full mark. Do not overfill oil tank as this will cause engine breathing issues. Drain the oil when it's hot. The 15 sec burst sounds silly to me but you were right to let it settle for a while before starting although 45 deg should not harm the fridge at all. As for the heat on the sides if the unit is working well (cold enough in both sections and shutting on and off) then I would suggest it is fine. If the fridge is working hard the gas entering the condenser is up to 150 deg. F or more it can be very uncomfortable to touch even after travelling a distance to the sides of the unit.

Have you checked the oil? many motors have an oil pressure switch. When did you last change it? if the oil gets hot and thin, there is less oil pressure. Could also be a safety switch, vibrating loose. Switch on seat maybe?
