it only has 1700 miles why is it burning oil?

  • Anonymous May 25, 2012

a week ago it kept jumping between having power and not having power. like it was glitching almost. would that help narrow down a solution?

If you have power and then not have power at any given time, its probably electronic like bad wires or an coil trying to short out. If it does it when it is wet outside or when the humidity is high, then the spark plug wires are probably bad or a spark plug wire is lose. If the damp/high humidity seems to cause the intermitant power, spray all the spark plug wires completely with wd-40 and if it power resumes then the spark plug wires are bad. Take the spark plug wire and pull on the ends lightly and see if they come off and if so the ends are lose and can cause that kind of problem. Also the spark plug wires could be arcing against the engine.

if the fuel filter was bad what would that effect?

  • knot
    knot May 27, 2012

If the fuel filter was really bad, it would affect the entire power band so it would not be on/off power as stated. If the fuel filter is mostly plugged it would affect the mid to upper power range according to how plugged it was. A really plugged up fuel filter would allow the engine to be boggy in most of the power ranges from idle upward.

Hi, Brandongman I would really love to help you with your bike question but due to the magnitude of yesterday's solar flare the batteries in my crystal ball are dead and my mental telepathy headset circuitry was melted. I need the year, make, and model of your motorcycle please click on " Request More Info" directly above and provide this information in the box that will open and then click on the green send box in the bottom right-hand corner after it posts I will receive an "ALERT" icon that will allow me to respond to your information. Good luck and have a wonderful day.

This is probably a generic problem. The bike set for a year and the rings are stuck. The rings, cylinder and maybe a valve or two are rusted due to condensation.

Did you replace the plugs? (Cables)
Maybe that is the problem with the power.

What is the compression on the cylinder compared to the other cylinders? It should be within 10%. Some causes can be - as you suggested - the valve stem seals. Also, the sleeve could be rusted, as the valves could have been open on that cylinder. Generally speaking, on a 4-cylinder motor 1 cylinder has both its valves closed, 1 has both open, 1 has an inlet valve open and one has an exhaust valve open at any given time. Another possibility is that the valve could be sticky - try Wynn's Valve Ease or a similar product.

Pull one of the fuel hoses off of it's carburetor, and stick the end in a clean can or bottle. Turn on the fuel tap--you should get a thin stream of fuel. If it just drips, you need to clean the filter screen just above the fuel tap bowl. Hope that gets you running well.

I would try checking the rubber between the carb and motor for air leaks,and/or spray carb cleaner through while running with the air box open.
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: i have a 1998 susuki katana motorcycle that starts

There is a vaccum fuel valve, that shuts off the fuel when not running, if that line has a crack or leak it will not let fuel into the carb.
The only thing I can think of w/o more info

Possibly yes; also may be a coil issue too. I had seen this same issue some time back with an older KZ650, in the end it was a coil. By stroke of luck working with the carbs put the wires back as required.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Where should I start on a motorcycle that has been sitting for 20 years?

Hi Nick:
What a great project.
- I'd start with a really thorough clean up.
- You've mentioned the gas. Definitely, drain the tank, hoses, carbs, and clean the carbs. If there's a filter I'd change it.
I wouldn't even try to run it without cleaning the carbs first.
- Replace the battery, oil, and spark plug.
- Engine coolant?
- Tires? I wouldn't worry until I had it running but definitely replace.
Patience & time. You'll have an excellent bike.

What is wrong with the tank?? Rust? If not, the same gunk in the tank is in the carbs, They need to be cleaned too. If it is rust, you can clean and seal the tank like new again, with a little elbow grease and a product called POR, (paint over rust), It works great. leaves the tank looking like brand new inside, if it is gummed up from sitting, you will need to soak everything in carb cleaner, and scrub and clean and scrub and rub and wipe and pick out gunk till it is squeaky clean. Then maybe it will run. The jets in the carbs are super sensitive, the slightest spec of dirt or the tiniest clog, it will not run right. Check it out, hope this helps.

you say you cleaned the carbs, but did you pull and clean the jets ? they are very very tiny holes, and take like nothing to plug them. pull the jets and run a wire from a wire brush thru them, should start for you now

Hobart 10,000 has been sitting for about 3 years and won't start any suggestions?

I know this is an old post, but I just had this same situation. Inherited a unit from my father in law and it had be sitting about a year. I drained the gas tank (disconnect fuel line and pressurize tank inlet with shop vac) and flushed out fuel lines and replace fuel filter, air filter, oil and filter. Cleaned and lubricated all carb and choke mechanisms. Sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner and let it soak. Put in fresh gas. Cranked and cranked and cranked. Did not start right away, but stuck with it. I put some gas in a syringe used for injecting meat (just so you know the size) and remove everything above the carb venturi. Put about 1 cc of gas directly in the carb and cranked. it started and ran until that gas burned up (about 2 seconds). It ran ok but wasn't getting fuel so I suspected the fuel pump. Kept at it and repeated this about 15 to 20 times and noticed that it would run just a wee but longer each time. Until finally it caught and ran strong. Put everything back and it is in great shape. Hope that helps. Also, I noticed there was quite a bit of moisture in the muffler. This sputtered out until it got out enough to evaporate it all out. I now keep it covered when not in use - something I am not sure my father in law did.

Carb would be the place to start assuming it was running fine before it was stored. Gas can "varnish" in carbs while in storage for long periods of time if a fuel stabilizer wasn't added before storing. Might try some fuel system cleaner before going to the trouble of removing the carb.

MY 02 750 KATANA WILL NOT CRANK. IT'S BEEN SITTING FOR 2 YEARS. IT WILL RUN FOR ABOUT 3 SECONDS AND THEN SHUT OFF.

If the carbs were not drained before it was laid up, it forms a varnish and clogs everything. Try removing the carbs, stripping them and giving them a good clean. Blow out the jets but don't prod anything into the holes. Also remove the plugs and sqirt a bit of oil into the plug holes to lubricate the bores, crank the engine like this to spread the oil and get rid of the excess, put the plugs back and give it a whirl. It will make plenty of smoke but that will clear.

Best way to clean carbs on 94 750 honda, been sitting for 2 years tried once to clean old gas out but runs real bad

The best way to clean any carbs that have been sitting is to remove them from the engine and carefully disassemble, one at a time, clean everything with a spray on carb cleaner. Pay attention to "varnish" dried gas that looks amber on the metallic parts. This causes the jets to not seat properly and the float to stick, patience and doing on thing at a ime makes it easy to put things back together.

CHECK THE IDLE ADJUSTMENT AND CORRECT IF NEEDED. IF THIS DOESNT CORRECT THE PROBLEM, YOU MAY HAVE TO HAVEA THE CARBS CLEANED AND SYNCED. ESPICIALLY AFTER SITTING A YEAR!
