1999 Honda Shadow Aero, temp light on fan not coming on

Temp light comes on after riding 20 minutes or so but fan not coming on. I put power to fan and it works so thinking it's thermostat switch at bottom of radiator (based on diagram from Honda) but want to make sure.

I also checked fan fuse and it's good. There is a sessor called a thermostat switch at bottom of radiator (based on diagram from Honda) is that what tells fan to come on? Is that my problem? There is also a sending unit on the thrmostat housing, could that be the problem?

Honda calls it a Thermo Switch and it's at the bottom of radiator, is that what you are referring to? Are you sure there is a auxiliary fan relay? Honda doesn't show one.

Yap it has a termo sensor, if it fails, your fan wont turn on, and also check the auxilliary fan relay.

I think you are quite correct. The neoprene rubber oil seals like to be warm to grab the bearing properly.
Keep your eye on it though.

If your bike were a 1959 650cc Triumph Thunderbird, like mine, I would have said you have run out of oil!

Ride safely.

I've got a 1999 honda 600 shadow recently purchased and i've never seen the fan or temp light kick on. i'm reluctant to take it on a long trip until i'm sure everything is operating correctly.

the fan will only come on when there is insufficient air flow to cool the radiator
to check the fan by pass all controls and apply power direct to the fan
you could check the system by removing the temp sensor and immersing it in boiling water to see if the lights come on and the fan starts

I have a 1999 shadow aero and the temperature gauge comes on after about 30 minutes of riding, the light will go off and on if i continue riding. Could it be the thermostat if the light goes off and on ?

Had a simlair problem with Honda ST1300, the fault was a leaking hose between the radiator and overflow header tank. Light would come on when the bike was in slow moving traffic and go off again once the bike was at speed. Worth a look?

2004 honda sabre cooling fan is not coming on,causing the temp.light to come on..checked fuses..now what?

The most common problem Honda has with its fans, is a bad fan switch on the radiator (two wires)(the single wire is just the temp sender). Be sure to hot wire the fan just to make sure it is not a bad motor on the fan but 95% of the time it is a bad switch.
