Hi, Anonymous tail light issues are relatively easy to diagnose and repair always check the tail light fuse first and make sure you have power on both sides of the fuse holder and the usual suspects are:
1. Tail light bulb element is broken.
2. Tail light bulb soldered contacts are extremely worn down.
3. Tail light bulb socket corroded.
4. Tail light bulb socket has no power and or ground.
5. Tail light wiring harness damaged from the rear tire.
6. Tail light rear fender wiring harness connector faulty due to corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets.

SOURCE: 1984 Honda interceptor brake light

Check the bulb first, check fuses, thn check if theres 'live' current to the brake light wire to the bulb socket (using a tester).
If theres no 'live' current to the bulb socket thn proceed to the brake light switch and check for the 'live' current to the wires there, one of the wires there should have a 'live' current of course having the igntion switch 'on'.
If theres is 'live' current there, thn the switch is faulty it may just need cleaning, try to clean by using WD-40,if it doesn't help thn replace it.
If you still have no 'live' current on any of the wires to the brake switch thn trace the wire (color) from the rear light socket and follow to the fuse box / ignition switch.
Hope this helps!

SOURCE: 1995 Honda Nighthawk 750 Neutral Light Problem

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your decribed problem could either be a neutral switch about to fail (least likely) or a loose grounding issue (most likely).  This switch must read 0 ohms to ground when in neutral and infinity (no reading) when in any gear.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

SOURCE: 93 Honda Nighthawk 750, when I pull in the clutch

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Check / replace the diode that connects the clutch switch and neutral switch. The diode normally would have green/red and light green/red wires.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

SOURCE: tail light indicator remains on, 1984 honda shadow

I believe that Alex is talking about the "idiot light" labeled "Tail light" on the dash of his 84 Shadow. When this idiot light is lit, it is supposed to mean the tail light has burned out. My 85 VT700 has a problem where that idiot light fades on and off even though the tail light is working fine. If I apply the brakes (an brake light comes on), that idiot light goes out.

I have not solved the problem, but I did investigate this about 2 years ago. The Idiot light is connected to a small rubber encased box about 2 by 2 by 2 inches located under the tank, near the air filter on the right side. Several wires come out of that box. One wire provides power to the tail light. Another wire goes to the idiot light. My memory is fuzzy, but there probably is a ground and/or a battery lead coming out of the box as well.

I believe the circuit is measuring the current going to the tail light. If the current is too low (implying the bulb is burned out), then it connects the wire to the idiot light to ground or battery+. The circuit is falsely detecting low current.

Several things might fix this:
1) Change the bulb to one that draws more current.
2) Put a resistor in parallel with the tail light, to double the current.
3) Buy another "box" on ebay (I tried this, and it did not solve my problem).

I also have a related (?) problem with the low fuel light not working when it should. I tested the circuit to the low fuel sensor in the reserve tank, by grounding the wire, and Low fuel light works. I replaced the low fuel sensor, no change in problem.

I noticed, that if I take a several hour trip on the turnpike, the tail-light indicator will eventually go out and stay out. If that happens, and I run low on fuel, the "low fuel" indicator works again.

This has me thinking this could be a voltage problem. After a long high speed trip, the main voltage regulator normally reduces the voltage, to prevent over charging the battery.

I have wondered if the sensor circuit has a secondary voltage regulator (or a Zener Diode) in the idiot light cluster, which instead is providing full battery voltage to the sensor circuits. This would also explain why the "tail light" indicator turns off when I apply the brakes, since the overall voltage drops a little when the brake lights come on. The wiring diagram in my Honda repair manual does not go into that much detail, and I have not pursued this theory.

SOURCE: 1991 CB 250 Nighthawk: whats the top speed for a 1991 honda nighthawk 250...

I have had my 2008 Nighthawk 250 up to 70mph with some left over. I just got it so I haven't really run it full throttle yet ( 75 miles on the OD ) I weight 300 lbs. I would guess 80 on a flat road. I felt comfy at 70 but this is my 5th bike. I bought this one for the gas mileage and 1 yr. warranty. I will try actual top speed on the Interstate in about 1000 miles. Hope this helps. I like the bike. Chris

What would be the symptoms of a broken wire on a neutral switch for a 1984 cb Honda/

No neutral light, will not start without clutch lever pulled in (and possibly sidestand up, if it has a safety switch).
If the broken wire is touching a ground, the neutral light will not go off.
