1979 Suzuki GS1000, cylinders 2 & 3 are not firing

1979 gs1000, cylinders 2&3 are not firing.just replaced coil for 2&3, still won't fire. what else will stop from firing? plugs are new. will start, maybe fire on all plugs but after short warm up only fire on 1&4 plugs. if the bike has two points could this stop the firing ???

    I'd eleminate the points all together by purchasing a "dynatek" all in 1 electronic ignition $160 for my gs850

SOURCE: 1979 suski 750,bike runs on 2 left side cylinders,

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

With the indulgence of craigjamesbt...

A few additional ideas to consider:

  • it would be an electrical/ignition issue if 1 & 4 or 2 & 3 will not fire but not 3 & 4;
  • almost always, raw fuel on exhaust indicates a flooded engine. A flooded engine would most likely be a carb issue;
  • best way to determine if it is an engine concern is to do a compression test;
  • a way to test the right carb pair is to deliberately starve them of fuel by temporarily plugging/blocking the inlet port/seat with rubber similar in appearance as to those used for glue gun, not installing the needle and float. Assemble the carb and install. Start the bike and use/spray carb cleaner on the right side carb. Note if 3 & 4 will fire even intermittently.
Would appreciate a postback on results/updates on any developments.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: My #1 and #2 cylinders are not firing. I have

Are the plugs sparking. Short them out to the engine while cranking engine to see spark at electrode. If they are not are you getting power to the coils. If they are sparking do they get wet when they are in place in the engine and it is run. Run it for a minute and remove plugs to check. If they are dry you may have a carb problem. If they are wet check the compression on the engine cylinders you may have blown the head gasket between no 1 and no 2 cylinders.

Since the problem is random on both HT coils I am beginning to suspect a malfunction of the CDI unit that feeds them. I would first check that your connections to this are good. Try to clean them up or disconnect and reconnect the plug to the CDI and especially check the 12v into the unit. Please get back to me on the result.

Thank you.
