Hi, I've got a 1993 honda XR250L that I've had for 7 years or so. The guy who sold it to me said it starts cold - I bought it because it was in such good condition. Once warmed up it runs fine - even in very cold temps. The problem is start up. I have to keep the choke pulled up and kick it 5-8 time for it to start. Then I have to hold the choke up (closed?) for several minutes while reving it until it will come back down to a normal idle. Now even that doesn't work - I have to turn the idle adjuster on the carb way in (clockwise) and hold out the choke for it to start and still same problem with warming it up. My brother and I have taken the carb apart twice, cleaned everything and put a gas filter on the tube leading from the tank to avoid any stuff getting in the carb and clogging the jets. We also adjusted valve clearance which was way too narrow. This helped somewhat but didn't last. My other bike which I have since sold was a 1987 XL250 and that started on the second kick in any conditions and ran perfect. Trying to get this '93 to run like that. Any suggestions? Thanks, John

my guess is that its not the carb at all but it might be the gas line in side the tank is cloged to the point whare you need to have it on choke in order to pull enough gas to the carb which would be the reason for it not wanting to come back down to idle quickly or it could be the fuel pump is cloged and if you tried that already than the fuel adjustment is way off and will need to be adjusted while a friend or family is keepin it running
and if that is not the problem than email me.
good luck:)

It's a '91 model. When is the last time you had the carb cleaned out? Sounds like you've got a stopped up low speed jet. The hole in that jet is less than 0.020" in diameter. Doesn't take much to obstruct that. Do you run a fuel filter in your fuel line? I'd pull the carb and take the float bowl off. You'll see a large jet directly in the middle of the carb. Just off to the side, you should see another small jet. This is the low speed jet. Take it out and clean the jet using aerosol carb cleaner. Do not stick any wire or anything through the jet. You should be able to hold it up the the light see through it. Set you idle mixture screw at one turn off the bottom to begin with. Once you get the engine running and warmed up, adjust for highest smoothest idle speed. Good Luck

if the diaphram is in poor condition as you say, it will need a new one.
if there is an air leak though the diaphram it can cause the symptoms you describe

Take your carburetor apart , clean it, and inspect the insides. My similar experience found the slow jet in the bottom of the bowl and a previous cleaner having installed the piston spring in the car top incorrectly. Put everything back to the stock settings (air screw). Double check the intake boot for cracks or separation. The problem is probably very simple , but disassembly will be required.

Has this 6 year old machine ever had a top-end job done? If not, then you may want to consider it. You can just replace the rings but I'd at least pull the cylinder apart and check for blow-by or a stuck ring. if your rings don't rotate freely in their channels, then it's time to replace them. If your cylinder has a glassy look to the inside walls, then it needs a hone job at a minimum. Kustom-kraft.com is an excellent choice for top-end service.. Bikebandit.com is THE place for parts.
