Has anyone had the same problem with their 2000 harley fatboy? I was draining the gas out of the tank and a large piece of primer came out. I looked inside the tank and to my surprise their is so much of this primer peeling off. What can I do to fix this problem? The bike has less then 2000 miles on it and Harley said they have never heard of this. They told me I could get a new tank, the problem is I paid for a custom paint job through harley and their was only 125 sets made. What is the point of paying for a custom paint job if I have to buy a whole new tank. Please can someone steer me in the right direction on how to fix this problem. Thank you

alrighty, I had the same issue with my bike. It took days of tracing the issue with a volt meter and I discovered an intermittent short that would "fry" my coi. This made the bike not start and when I replaced the coil, because I had removed the old coil and moved the wires the issue disappeared for a short time. It is known that SOMETIMES when the coil is mounted the two wiresthat go to the coil somhow get stretched. This over time cause an intermittent short and the coil is rendered "dead". The Fix: 1.get a replacement coil. 2.you need 6 inches of #18 wire 3. two aluminum wire splicers and two aluminum circle fittings for the coil posts. 4.take off the old coil. 5.cut back the wires that go to the coil about an inch. 6. using the aluminum splicers splice the wires making them about 3 inches longer. 7.splice in the aluminum circle fittings. 8.mount the new coil. 9. fire the bike up. Enjoy riding.

Drain the fuel either by siphening or removing the cross over tube at the front of the tank and letting it drain that way or just block off those cross over lines and leave the fule in the tank for removal.
0) remove seat
1) drain fuel
2) undo cross over line (bottom front of gas tank.
3) shut off pet **** and remove fuel line from pet ****.
4)there should only be 2 bolts holding the tank on, one at the top front of the tank and one at the back of the tank.
All in all a pretty easy (but possibloy messy) job.

remove seat, remove console on top of tank, disconnect wiring from console to tank, disconnect vent line if present, disconnect fuel line on tank, disconnect fuel gauge (up under tank on left side, 3 wires, 4 wire connector, wires are yellow, orange, and black), remove bolt at rear of tank, remove two side bolts up front under tank (coil bracket is there also, carefully cut clamp on cross over hose located up front under tank.
This works better with three hands remove one side of cross over hose, fuel will flow freely so the extra hands are good at "plugging" the hose and the tank. Gently remove tank tilting front of tank as much as you can till you get it clear of the frame, while still tilted at a steep angle put the cross over hose back on.
To make things easier drain all fuel out of tank before reversing the process to reinstall tank. Hope this helps.
