Question about 1996 Suzuki VS 1400 Intruder

I have a 1996 Suzuki Intruder 1400. The engine shuts off when I shift into 1st gear with the clutch squeezed. Any suggestions for solutions?

Check the sidestand switch and the clutch switch. Both of these will give the same problem.

SOURCE: Clutch bleed on a Suzuki 1400 Intruder 2000

One the left-hand side of the bike (facing forward), there is cover plate just ahead of the drive shaft. Remove that cover (mine has 8mm bolts). The bleeder valve is under this cover. Go to an auto parts store and get a "one man bleeder kit" or if you have some plastic tubing that will fit over the valve, you can use that and a clean jar. Follow the instructions on the bleeder kit, or if you're using the jar and tubing, fill the jar about a quarter of the way with break fluid (use DOT4, but never DOT5!). Take the cover off the master cylinder up at the handlebars, place the tube over the end of the bleed valve (after loosening it a turn or two. Place the other end of the tube down in the break fluid in the jar. Work the clutch lever until you stop getting bubbles in the jar. Be sure to keep the fluid level up in the reservoir. Tighten the bleeder valve, remove the tubing, top off the fluid and replace the covers.

Be careful not to get brake fluid on anything. It will eat paint and mess up other things.

Change the fluid in the clutch reservoir,bleed out the remaining fluid.(keep it full as you go) Should be dot 4 fluid not dot 3. U may need to rebuild the master cylinder or replace it.

Is it possable to add 5th gear to my 1996 suzuki intruder vs 1400 4 speed motorcycle


it would turn into an overdrive gear--a whole new 5 sp box is probly the answer--theres more shifting in traffic--to me 4 is enough-thats all olschool bikes had---------youd have to git with a customizer-there found in drag mags or online

I have a 96 Suzuki Intruder 1400. The problem is that sometimes I cannot downshift from 2nd gear thru neutral to 1st. It hangs up before going thru neutral to 1st. I have bled the system and it seemed...


bike is 15yrs-ajust clutch 1st-if no relief then a bottom end will have to be done and u need a clymer manual and special tools--the book covers complete maintenance

Clutch wont work , havent drove bike in over a year


It happened to my Yamaha, I started the bike in gear and drove it several miles, constantly squeezing and then releasing the clutch lever. I could feel it finally catching like it should because you will notice the engine rev up when you squeeze the lever or disengaging the clutch.

depends what gear your in but it shouldnt be runnnig like the motor is rouring if so you probaly need a clutch kit

Shifting problem 96 1400 Intruder 4 speed


Yes, the bad news is bent shift forks. The engine comes out and dissassembles into about 75 different parts. The gears come out, the the shift drum, then the forks. Not a job for the Saturday mechanic.
