SOURCE: Need to set floats on an xj 700
with the float bowl off and holding the carb level, adjust the float where it is level and the jet is up enough to seal. float should be set then.
SOURCE: has firing but wont start
check if its getting fuel and air, you need All 3 to make it run, if you have all of that (and going on the its firing concept) all that need to happen is fuel goes to carb, intake turns it to vapor, spark plug fires and ignites the fuel vapor and that causes the piston to go, so if its firing and all the above are good you should check the points and condensor, it should turn over for a few seconds and backfire if its not backfiring its likely not getting fuel, try to spray some ether(quik start or just some gas directly into the carb to see if anything hapens, You may need to take it to a shop or have friend with some mechanical background help ya. good luck Rotticus,
p.s. in the future be more specific and we can try to get more details for you, also google the bikes make and model and you should find some schimatics.
SOURCE: Can parts from one model be used on another model?
most likely yes, there was little change in the parts in these 1980's bikes. of course no engine parts will cross over
SOURCE: yamaha maxim xj 700 1985 wont start
Check the wiring inside the headlight case--that's where the wiring for the bar controls are connected into the main wiring harness. Look for loose or corroded connections. Try to get the starter working correctly, then concentrate on getting the engine to run. No-run usually means either no fuel into the cylinders or no spark to ignite the fire. Make sure to keep the battery charged while running the starter for testing.
