Do i need to be in gear to adjust clutch

The answer from Gregg is completely correct but I think you are asking how do I know it is correct.

Make sure you have the correct free play in the cable as Gregg said and the cable is free moving. To test for free movement pull clutch lever in half way and release it, it should snap back easily. Next start the engine and select first gear the gear should select easily, then select neutral this should also select easily.

Now try riding the bike and checking all the gears engage and dis-engage smoothly. The last test to try is find a street or road with a reasonable upward gradient. Maintain a steady speed in top gear and then start to accelerate if the clutch is correctly adjusted your revs and speed should increase progressively. If the revs increase and the speed drops off the clutch is slipping and needs to be re-adjusted.

Check your clutch lever throw out clearance it may be too high, or clutches may be worn. Adjust your free play clearance and test again, double check you are not in neutral.

Well, the answer is yes and no. If you hear a clunk noise when shifting to first gear when the engine and transmission is cold, this is normal. Once the engine reaches normal operating temp, the answer is "NO", not normal.

In a cold engine, the oil is thick and even with the clutch pulled in, enough oil is between the plates to drive the mainshaft and cause the noise. Now. once the oil gets hot, it shouldn't do this. If it does, you need to adjust the clutch.

To adjust the clutch, find the cable adjuster in the middle of the clutch cable. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster inwards to get as much slack in the cable as possible.

Now, remove the derby cover, spring, and locknut at the clutch release mechanism on the outer primary cover. Inside the mechanism is a screw. Turn this screw as far as it will go clockwise but don't try to force it. Once it stops, turn the screw back clockwise 1/4 turn. Replace the "locknut", spring, and the derby cover over the release mechanism.

Now, go back to the cable adjuster and adjust it back outwards until you get about an 1/8" of freeplay. Squeeze the clutch a few times and check the freeplay again. Lock the lock nut and replace the rubber boot over the adjuster.

clutches are to far worn or adjustment is needed . if you adjust do it
a turn and check, if needed ? do it some more. until clutch feels right . if it is to far gone it wont last long even with adjustment.

If you have a fluid clutch then try bleeding to see if any air is in the pipes.If its cable check the adjustment.If all is fine then you have a clutch pressure plate fault.Solution Replace the clutch assemebly

If your clutch is slipping the clutch plate is worn out and will have to be changed. This involves engine and gearbox has to be taken out - then the gearbox has to be sperated from the engine to remove the clutch assembly and replace the clutch plate with a new one.

There is no adjustment on this clutch as it is hydraulic and therefore is self adjusting.
