Bike makes a clicking noise when i try to start it

few things
new batteries only hold a little charge in them
so make sure it is fully charged
if your bike is making a clicking noise when you press the starter but is still not turning it is your starter solenoid
if it is making a clicking noise then your starter motor has seized and your solenoid is ok
if not making a clicking noise
it is possible your starter solenoid is broken and will need replacing
easy test is the starter solenoid has two electric poles on it
one going to the battery the other going to your starter motor
get a large spanner (wrench)
and with the ignition turned on
touch both poles with the spanner
("caution") this will spark a little so make sure there is no fuel close by
if the engine turns over
then your solenoid needs replacing

Have you tried a spare key ?
Usually the chip in the key has failed, or the sensor in the lock cylinder.

Did you the drain the old fuel from the carb? You need to clean out the old gas in the carb. by draining them.

Check and clean the terminals then boost the car to start it after it starts. Well it's running take off the positive terminal if the car stops running the alternator is no good and you have to replace it.

Could be, replace or have it tested. My old bike a 1998 VT1100CT had a problem with the starter being weak, like the battery was dying. Turned out to be the battery ground wire bolt, going to the back of the starter. It just had a little rust on it, and the bolt broke when I went to remove it. But once replaced the bike starts great, we replaced the battery, took apart the starter tested everything. All for a slightly rusted bolt not making a good ground... Check your Regulator, and any corrosion around the connections!

Charge up the battery, check the battery connections, sounds like a discharged battery

Either you have a dead short in your wireing or your battery is not charging fully. Use a volt meter your battery will have 12 volts start the bike and it should read 13 plus then take it up to 2000 rpm above idle anyway it should read 14 plus. If you dont have these numbers then you have a stator or regulator problem or both. You may be geting a slight charge when running but not enough to keep the battery peaked out.

If you are confident that the battery is good, check for corroded wires to the starter. Start at the battery and follow the POS cable to the solenoid. From the solenoid to the starter. If the wires are good and you have a solid ground, then I would suspect the starter brush pack. They could need to be replaced or just cleaned.

got a charger and it ended up being a dead battery.---- If that's the original battery, it's probably toast. You'll probably do well to search for a replacement at this point. Bike batteries are generally considered short-lived. The longest lasting battery I ever had in a bike went 9 years*. But that's so far away from a normal lifespan it's almost ridiculous. I suppose the average is more like 4-6 years but the modern, Maintenance-Free types seem the best.
