SOURCE: I have a 1997 900rr fireblade. I want to do an oil
Where do you live? That has a lot to do with choices first off...desert areas with triple digit temps... i would recommend 20w-40...cooler climates and coastal areas 10w-40 works good too! i purchase four quarts for my oil change and this includes filter change also. on most bikes people dont realize that the same oil thats cooling you engine is also cooling you transmission so oil ghanges shood be more frequent than you think, especially if you ride hard and once in awhile misshift and grind those gears. first ride the bike and get it hot then pull the drain plug this will tend to faciltate for best draining of all particulate matter. And if you bike is really old and you believe its dirty inside well just go down to autozone and grabe a can of "Sea Breeze" pour have a can in the oil system and ride it for about fifteen miles or so then drain it immediately filter too!...this cleaning gets those nasty carbon deposits off the piston and valves.
When checking oil the bike should be vertical.
I never fill to the top. always go half way...this ensures that you wont destroy the engine by overfilling. Chech again after a week to see if it needs more...after running with the new filter it will absorb some of the oil, thus taking it down a notch. Be slow on the last bottle you might only need half of it.

Dont rebuild unless absolutetly necessary or need to rejet. Try some Seafoam first, it might save you hundreds of dollars and a lot of frustration.
read directions on can or just try pouring 1/3 can into two gallons gas and really get on it ...it might clear up any hesitation or stalling if thats whats happening. I got mine at Autozone for $10.( And it fixed the problem after riding for about 15 miles.)

Could be the coil pack probably a weak stator,. Try a pickup coil for the stator if you can get your hands on it way cheaper then replacing whole unit. Good luck.
