SOURCE: I have a 2007 triumph bonneville with 4700 miles.
My front brakes would pulsate. I replaced the front disc because it had warped but after 10000kms I had to do it again. After a lot of research I finially got the right answer from a brake disc technician. The hub was warped and needed to be machined, otherwise the disc would end up doing the same. He also replaced the front disc with a floating disc. So far (5000kms) the problem hasn't returned!

Take a very close look and you would discover that it goes in and not open end out.
So the answer is "In". the shaft goes in.
